March 18, 201214 yr I am thinking of buying the Dell Ultrasharp 30" to replace my triple screen setup which uses 3 x ViewSonic 20" 4:3s. I would then rely on my TrackIR for sideviews. However, the native resolutions make me wonder if two of the old ViewSonics could be linked in portait mode, giving a resolution of 4960x1600. The natives of each screen are 2560x1600 and 1600x1200.Has anyone tried this? Regards Frank Jones
March 18, 201214 yr Hi Frank,As far as Matrox are telling, all connected monitors must use the same resolutions, maybe some one has done it, I don't know.http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/th2go/resolution/resolutions.htmlRon.
March 18, 201214 yr Hi Frank,Not possible using AMD Eyefinity http://www.amd.com/us/products/technologies/amd-eyefinity-technology/how-to/Pages/faqs.aspx#diff-resand the same for nVidia SLI Surround http://widescreengamingforum.com/book/export/html/1504 - read down and you will find it described. In both scenarios, you end up only being able to run at the lowest resolution of the 3 monitors. i.e. 1600 x 1200.You can run the screens on a another dedicated graphics card to undock and display cockpit panels but the card cannot be connected to the SLI configuration.Regards,Ted. March 18, 201214 yr Author Thanks Ron and Ted. I don't use TH2G these days, preferring the 2 card nVidia method. But, as Ted points out, that could not work at the higher resolution. So that's another good idea for the waste bin Regards Frank Jones
March 18, 201214 yr Not so fastJonahbird.I had the same issue...and I got this response herehttp://widescreengam...e-size-monitorsWhere they suggested this toolhttp://www.kegetys.f...hp?topic=2123.0And this config toolhttp://www.kegetys.f...hp?topic=2631.0I can't test it out since this requires Win 7. If you are running Win 7. Give it a shot and report back here. Would much appreciate itManny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
March 19, 201214 yr Author Hi MannyThanks for that heads-up. Sadly I think this link http://www.kegetys.fi/SoftTH/ shows that it doesn't work in FSXRegardsFrank Regards Frank Jones
March 19, 201214 yr Frank, just curious why you are giving up on the triple screen setup?gb. YSSY. March 19, 201214 yr Author Hi gbI think my ViewSonics are not synching properly with Win7. When I boot up I variously get - one screen live in the lowest resolution; or one screen live in the correct resolution; or two screens live in correct res; and I sometimes have to reboot 3 or 4 times before the 3 screens come up properly. My friend Ted, who posted under Jaz+Funk, has the same setup but with 3 Dell screens. He never experiences a boot up problem like that. So I am thinking of changing to Dell screens.Over the years I've tried projection,TH2G (limited res and blanks at the left and right edges when bezel adjusted) and I now use the 2 nVidia card method. So far, I have found that best of all for an immersive experience. The 5 screen portait setups that are appearing don't appeal to me at all.The larger screen (30") at a 16:10 ratio should give an excellent single screen image with a little more panel detail than the 16:9s, and I'm thinking TrackIR would add the immersion feel without those visually intrusive bezels (albeit adjusted).I don't really know, but if I don't try it I won't find out. The expensive next level would be to add 2 more 30" Dells. What a money pit FSX is, but having tried MSFlight and X-Plane I believe FSX is still the best simulation around, with many more years life in it. Prepar3d is an interesting improvement on FSX, but far too expensive - IMHO.Best regards Regards Frank Jones
March 19, 201214 yr Oh Lord...so that kegetys doens't work with FSX! Shucks! Gawdangit! Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
March 20, 201214 yr Thanks Frank.I agree that 16:9 is not the best screen ratio. Is there any card that could drive 3X30" Dells at playable frame rates? gb. YSSY. March 20, 201214 yr Author Hi gbGood question. I hadn't even thought about resolution limits. My friend,Ted, is here on Friday. He'll know. Regards Frank Jones
March 20, 201214 yr Hi GB,I would recommend a pair of 3GB ZOTAC GeForce® GTX 580 AMP²! Edition - ZT-50104-10P in SLI surround mode.http://www.zotac.com...=100253〈=enI have two of the 1.5GB versions in SLI surround mode and they are very fast and run very cool, even under load.Regards,Ted. Ted,Although you are able to use three monitors with the two cards in SLI, are you getting worse performance (Less FPS) with SLI than with a single card?Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
March 20, 201214 yr Hi Manny,No, I get a very fluid experience in FSX. I know that it all depends on how you have FSX configured but on a scale of 1 to 10 my settings are at about 8. Using a detailed glass cockpit, TIR, real-time weather, GEX, REX and UK2000/ORBX airports I am getting from 24 FPS to 35 FPS on the ground and I have seen in excess of 100 FPS in the air from outside the cockpit.I have also tried Flight with FRAPS running and I was getting 58-60 FPS consistently with all the sliders on max. X-Plane 10 hits the GPU's harder and I have not yet got the configuration right. At the end of the day, as long as you see the scenery moving smoothly and the 'game play' is fluid, that it what counts IMHO.So for me, SLI does not degrade the performance. Maybe it is because I have a very fast CPU and memory to compliment the GPU's?One other thing, both my GPU's are running a full 16x PCI-E slot speed. The Sandybridge (not E type) motherboards only have 8x PCI-E slots for the GPU's when more than one GPU is used. So maybe that would cause a bottle neck with SLI in conjunction with FSX for others?Regards,Ted. March 27, 201214 yr I am running 2 x 20" in portrait with a 30" landscape for 4960 x 1600 .. with dual 480 gtx's .. it works! Now the bad news. Even with a Core i7 3.2 Ghz I have not found performance tweaks to make it run above 8 - 12 FPS. I have my settings fairly high and have tried many tweaks .. but those all seem geared for single displays or Surround mode or something. I'll try some of what I find on this thread and report back if I get it to run better.
