March 23, 201214 yr Nope, in fact, the sensing should be correct, and that is precisely the reason you would set the HSI the other way round, when flying backcourse - e.g when northwest of the signal centerline, it senses you are to the right (relative to the arrow) and vice versa. --Peter Fabian
March 24, 201214 yr Thanks, good to know... fwiw I was flying this approach without LNAV, just using the NAV1 freq and HSIYep, but you could load the missed app and have it ready to execute while you fly the nav1 HSI. You can also enter the point and build the hold, and go direct but not select the exec button. This way on the go, all you have to do is select MAP mode, go direct to the missed app point and select lnav. Even if you just select map mode and flew to the point manually/HDG select, you will have time to get set up. The key is having the FMC pre loaded so that u only have to hit one key to get it going. I do this alot RW on training flights. About 2 touch n goes from the last one, i put my ifr clearance on request. While my student is flying the last touch n go, I grab the clearance and load the flight plan up to the replace active flight plan prompt. On the last TG after retracting the gear i execute the replace flight plan prompt. Now all i have to do is give the student heading select and a vertical mode. After I'm switched to departure, all i have to do is give another direct and LNAV is available. This way im not heads down, loading the flight plan, talking on the radio, configuring the aircraft, and watching my student at the same time. I love watching my instructor students try to get this all done after the last touch n go. As they scramble on the FMS heads down, I intentionally forget to call for gear and flap retraction lol.Nope, in fact, the sensing should be correct, and that is precisely the reason you would set the HSI the other way round, when flying backcourse - e.g when northwest of the signal centerline, it senses you are to the right (relative to the arrow) and vice versa. That's what I was thinking, but it's been so long since I've actually been at a field with a BC let alone fly one. March 24, 201214 yr Is there a back course or REV button? Some folks got confused here because there is nothing "backcourse" about this example above at SNA ILS 19R. The fact that you are on the other side of the LOC while doing missed is really not flying a backcourse. Wrong title. Michael J.
March 24, 201214 yr Author The topic post was a legitamite question I had... I indirectly added the SNA ILS missed as a related topic..So the answer is no, there is not a REV/BC button the MCP. Proper title was used. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
March 24, 201214 yr The question was legitimate but the subject matter has nothing to do with the back course approach. Michael J.
