Utility to check scenery cfg

Featured Replies

Do any of these utilities maintain the scenery priority as set in the scenery library FS settings?
I would hope that they all do, I know Steve Greenwood's does, as linked to by Gary- http://forum.avsim.net/topic/367692-utility-to-check-scenery-cfg/#entry2318365While Steve's is probably the simplest, it just cleans up the scenery.cfg, some of the others allow you to manipulate the scenery.cfg without needing to start the sim.regards,Joe

Joe, from a design perspective, rsc doesn't ever use the scenery manager in flight simulator. It defeats the purpose of managing the scenery file yourself. You can look at this situation in a couple of ways. One perspective is that you can either marry a gui that produces a file or you can marry the file itself. Another is that you can put off the inevitable of learning how to work with the scenery file for only so long.In fact, I think everyone should endeavour to know and remember every single scenery entry that is in their scenery.cfg file. It's not very hard to do and it's a technique that many experienced hobbyists are already using. Joe, you know all of the entries in your scenery file, don't you?Everyone, it's important to keep in mind that rsc is in it's infancy. This is a first release and there are many more to come. I've already been working to enhance it's capabilities with the goal of making it more useful. So please be aware that the destination of rsc is not just a renumbering tool, it's simply at a place I thought to be the most useful to begin with.Mark

Since you asked, no I don't see the need to put that much thought into it, but that's just me.regards,Joe

Interesting...thanks for your thoughts then. One more thing since you seem to know the other apps out there, does Steve's app run a syntax check? I've never seen it but have heard that it's really cool.Mark

It changes the [Area.nn] to match the layer= line, then re-orders the .cfg in numerical order.I am not aware if it does anything beyond that, that's all I have ever used it for. There is no GUI, you simply drag and drop the scenery.cfg on the .exe and it spits out an altered .cfg along with the original as a backup.regards,Joe

That actually sounds like a nice easy to use application then...another good alternative. I think the important philosophy here is to always use what makes you feel the most comfortable. I wrote rsc to duplicate the process of the way I work with a scenery file. So straight out the door that means it's not going to reach everyone. But it's going to be so easy to use for the people that it does reach. If you get the chance, take a look at it's ability to compare files using notepad++. You know, I think I'll post a short tutorial on how to do it. I use it all the time comparing archive files to working files etc...I think using rsc v2 and Notepad++ together rocks...Mark

I have 420 entries in my scenery.cfg. How does one know and remember them? Only so much room in the olde brain, might have to save the space for something else.Wife - 'HOW COULD YOU FORGET MY BIRTHDAY?!?!'Me - 'Because FlyTampa's Buffalo scenery is number 244 in my scenery.cfg' :LMAO:Cheers forgetfully, SLuggy

I do not have a signature. Why are you reading this?

I've used many - this is by far the slickest tool to manage your scenery files...Name: fsscen16.zip Size: 206,821 Date: 02-10-2009 Downloads: 1,255FSSCEN16.GIFFS2004 FS Scenery Manager v1.6. Another good alternative. So there's plenty of choices out there, which is the whole point. It's not as if you have to use one or the other, it's what ever works for you. It's nice that they're all free as well.Hey Scott, does that run a syntax check as well? I've never seen it before...Mark

As an example of another option, here is what I do, call it the old school method.I have multiple scenery.cfg files depending on what I want to do in the sim.I also have some simple batch files that rename the appropriate scenery.cfg for what it is I want to do.As an example, I have some addons that simply do not work with addon mesh. One of my scenery.cfg files has my addon mesh turned off. If I want to fly to/from those addons all I have to do is run the batch file before I start the sim and I am good to go.regards,Joe
