April 24, 200422 yr Im confused. What does this payware mesh achieve that isn't achieved by other mesh that's available freely on the net? It is just another mesh, right? Only screenies I can find show it with VFR Photographic Scenery. Do you have it with that or are you running it on default or modified scenery? Could you post some screenshots in the Screenie Forum of the Shoreham and Southampton areas? If VFR Terrain doesn't correct the Landclass then I can't see it's of any benefit. If it's both LC and Mesh then I might be tempted!Allcott
April 24, 200422 yr VFR terrain plus VFR photo scenery is a fantastic combination. VFR terrain is not only high resolution mesh but gives highly detailed coastlines and landclass, if you don't have photo scenery, for the gaps and accurate lakes, no more bathtub effects. I'll try and do some screenies but it may be a few days.John
April 25, 200422 yr The mesh in VFR Terrain is only a fraction of the total package but it is the highest resolution you are likely to see.I started off with the default mesh and was blown away when LAGO released the TerraMesh. Then came the SRTM data and I tried the Genesis, Pietro, Denney and Faitmain versions - all much the same but these took the level of accuracy way above the LAGO product. Great detail and I thought SRTM was THE standard for the future. The new mesh in the VFR Terrain product is a quantum jump again over SRTM. The screenshots look good but you don't appreciate the accuracy of this mesh until you fly it. The mesh is based on the NextMap UK 5m IFSAR radar data and it delivers this right down to the limitations of FS itself.Words just cannot describe how stunning the detail is and I won't try. If you are into high resolution presentation in FS I am sure you will check it out. I doubt you would be disappointed. If only 5m radar data was available globally...boneshttp://fsaviation.net
April 25, 200422 yr Author I would buy such a scenery in a heart beat since I think they are well worth the price. However I would need a night scenery that goes with it.Michael J. Michael J.
April 25, 200422 yr The scenery mesh is also for default flightsim textures so you get much nicer looking hills and mountains etc. Also the coastlines have been improved. This product isnt just for the photo scenery though of course it does look better with it as the photos match the terrain very precisely.Craig
April 25, 200422 yr Thanks for that, it was the reason I asked, as I abandoned the VFR Photo Scenery some time ago. If the VFR Terrain can offer substantial improvements in coastline shape and improve on the mesh I've got now then it might be worth it. Perhaps more so than VFR Photographic Scenery which is simply too limited, too unwieldy and too expensive for my needs. But not unless it also includes landclass, for the simple reason that FS2004 doesn't render mesh below 38 metre anyway. Any additional detail is a waste of time and money for me, unless the package also includes the landclass or some other unique features. Shoreham and Southampton are two good examples to use in FS because I'm familiar with the areas from the air, Southampton default is `missing` the defined line between the New Forest and the city, Shoreham has a pretty good stab at the South Downs but the coastline either side is just unfamiliar - and both these can be substantially improved by freeware that is already available in the library. Some screenshots of the VFR Terrain on default would help me decide whether its for me or not, as it sounds like the kind of thing I'd be interested in, but strangely everything I've read about is is a little `vague` about what it does. If it's just mesh then i'd pass with so much high quality freeware around and it will only add to the landclass discrepancies for the UK. I was wondering whether VFR Terrain was simply a lower cost way to encourage consumers into buying VFR Photographic Scenery, seeing as how they're joined at the hip! Many thanks for everyones time and trouble. Look forward to the screenshots. Allcott

April 25, 200422 yr Victor, FS2002 went to 19. FS2004 only goes to 38. Guess that was where the extra smoothness came from!Allcott
April 26, 200422 yr Got them, thanks John. Did try to get some photos today for comparison but the haze was too great above about 800ft AGL, had to turn back at Goodwood.Allcott
