Question On MAUI Departure Procedure

Featured Replies

Hi all, I was wondering why,on the Onohi 1 out Maui Maui runway 2, They have you fly over rising terrain?

It was pretty unnerving with the 737. I would think ATC would want you over the water.

Actually, that departure is mostly above water, and one little part above shore of island, not even close that big mountain in the middle of island.

Looks good to me:

That area of the island is almost at sea level and you will indeed be climbing over water fairly quickly. As the other poster noted, no where near Haleakala. When I was visiting there last year it was interesting to watch inbounds from the north for Rwy 02. Chk out the IAP - RNAV (RNP) Z RWY 2. My flight from Hilo actually flew that route. BTW I watched a 777 fly it.

Honestly? We just want you on the procedure. Responsibility-wise: if you've been assigned that departure and you don't fly it properly and hit the mountain, it's on you. If we're vectoring you and you hit the mountain, it's on us. Obviously as a human being, we don't want you hitting a mountain, but we don't care what you're flying over as long as you're flying what you're supposed to.
