You can takeoff without TO/GA, FD , or autothrottle engaged and fly it like an old 737-200. Taking away the automation will make you a very busy pilot! But keep in mind, this would be very unusual. I don't think you will find any operator that operates this way. Boeing's recommended NORMAL procedure is to takeoff in TO/GA mode with the FD and autothrottle engaged and you'll find most if not all 737 NG operators operate this way. John Floyd
May 5, 201214 yr Just keep in mind that if you manually advance the throttles, the correct way to do it is to advance them to a bit less than halfway to where you want them, let all the engines spool up to the same rotation, and then advance them again. This is done because when shoving two throttles forward all the way, you may accidentally advance one of them a bit further forward than the other one and initiate a swing from the asymmetric thrust, because the time it takes a jet engine to spool up is not linear across the throttle range, so there can be a big difference in spool up times for different N1 percentages, and at low speed, with no air flowing past the tail, you would have no rudder control authority to counteract any swing which had developed.
