Low & threatening winds aloft

Featured Replies

Folks

Went out to play weather balloon. All directions are in degrees magnetic, rather than true as they perhaps should be.:

0': 035/14

2,000': 048/15

4,000': 059/17

6,000': 066/20

8,000': 072/23

10,000': 076/26

12,000': 080/29

These were taken at PHTO, checked at PHNL and found to be the same. Would assume they apply to all airfields.

Clouds: BKN at 8,000', although if someone wanted to say SCT at 7,000' I wouldn't argue.

Temp: No idea

Dew Point: Ditto

Alt: 29.92

Might do a few more themes and post. Won't do them all - these planes are too small to be out among the giants...

YMMV

Hmm... pretty much the trade winds. Thanks for checking and posting.

Good info, thanks.

Temp is always 15C at sea level, measured on the engine oil temperature or cylinder head temperature gauges before starting the engine. This temperature drops to 14C if you're more than a few feet above actual sea level, so there are rounding issues.

While you're measuring things, record the altitude where the turbulence starts. For Low and Threatening, I think it starts about 6000 feet.

Some weather themes will have different wind speeds/directions, cloud cover and turbulence at different parts of the map. Mostly the winds are the same everywhere, but Isolated Thunderstorms will definitely have different winds occasionally; if it's raining, expect a variation from normal.

More winds aloft:

At PHTO, Inclement weather:

0': 260/16

2,000': 260/16

4,000': 260/16

6,000': 260/16

8,000': 260/16

10,000': 260/16

12,000': 260/16

Clouds: BKN at 8,000'.

Anyone care to take a guess at the surface visibility? I haven't. It's not that bad though.

Not very imaginative winds in that one.

At PHNL, Fair weather:

0': 000/00

2,000': 040/04

4,000': 044/05

6,000': 047/05

8,000': 050/06

10,000': 063/07

12,000': 065/08

Clouds: FEW at 10,000'.
