Camera simulation as well as the pilot keep awake thingie or PKAT

Recommended Posts

Why even bother to fly then? I never understood why someone would takeoff and go to sleep then wake up to land?

This is what seperates the Men from the Boys.

Those guys do it simply to pad their log books at a VA or vataware. That's why I only cross the pond.

Really? I love long haul, in fact, will be starting the HYPER4 STAR into KIAD soon. BAW265 from EGLL! Yesterday and day before done the BAW279/8, HR20M41 in total. http://www.vataware.com/pilot.cfm?cid=1201222 ;)

If you spend less than 30% of the flight at the controls then its a mere logbook pad, its like fishing but you are not at the reel most of the time. IAD from LHR is a pond hop and I can see people sticking around for much of it.

30% or less at the controls makes it pointless. I can't wait for the 77L to do some ULH's!

I usually cap it at around 9 hours, after that I really look forward to getting on the ground and shutting her down.

I can agree in the 767. Once I have the 777 I won't want to land it :LMAO: Knowing me I'll be doing Long Haul turnarounds..

Are you kidding me? This is a simulator, not real life. For those of us that have a job and/or a life and are bussy in real aviation and still like to do long haul oceanic's I cant imagine sitting at the computer and staring at the panel strait and level for 12 hours! You guys take this WAY to seriously. There is a point where you have to balance your flight simming with your real life if you have one. If not Bravo to you but don't hammer others for using the sim as they see fit. Maybe I should get rid of all my PMDG planes and use Abacus or Captain sim instead because I am not worthy of such realism.

I guess it's either FSX'ing or keep my job and/or neglect my responsibilities then.

What a joke. Maybe I will pick up some food stamps and some SSI so I can really pay attention and be a real FSX pilot like you. <_<

You guys actually log this stuff. I had no idea you could log it as "sim" time. I could have obtained a real job at American Airlines along time ago. What collumn does it go under?

Marc, RELAX!

I have a job(process server) and a life, and I fly longish(5-6 hr) flights without sleeping. True, I don't just stare at the screen, I multitask, read a book, listen to/play music(I play bass guitar), artwork, etc.

I never understand the "you take [hobby] seriously? You must [have no life/neglect responsibilities/whatever]" attitude. People sometimes take hobbies seriously. I know people who spend 8-12 hours playing music, some that spend all day writing, others that like nothing more than skate the day away. They still have jobs and friends and are productive members of society. For some people though, as soon as a computer is involved, what was once a hobby becomes a waste of time.

Don't be so judgmental!

Darrol,

Re Read the quote I posted. I am not directing this at you. I am addressing this at the posters attitude and what I quoted from that individual. Silly childish comments that have no place here and only exist because he is able to hide behind his computer. This is one of the few things I really hate about forums in that you have a few 12 year old trolls turning a good discussion into a bad discussion just because they can type. I probably should have just let it go but he caught me in a bad mood already so there you go. And the "too seriously" comment was directed at his attitude and not someone who sit's behind the computer on a long flight the whole time and does not think he is Tom Cruise with no pilots license. If I have the time I am there the whole time as well. It is also something I take seriously beyond a game but I am not going to make some silly rule that I have to sit at my crew station wearing my epilets the whole time and miss out on a girls gone wild party because the plane might crash or the FSX plane police might pull my pretend certificate because I spent to long in the back with the flight attendants. It is like me bagging on you because you may like to switch to external view during your flight. No, real men fly from the VC the WHOLE time right. Not saying you do, just saying that is what it is like, silly.

Cheers

Even as a proud European, well, let's just say European, I certainly vote for Boeing. Even as a passenger, they feel much more stable (except the 757 - hate that plane).

How many real world captains sit in the captains chair for a whole 12 hour long sector? You do realise the 777 has crew beds in the back don't you?

My virtual PMDG 777 will have beds in the back too. In fact, mine has a bed right in the cockpit.

In the RW they have more than one pilot as well, the cockpit is not abandoned. I just don't see the point in doing the leg if you leave after reaching cruise and then come back after it was paused on TOD, so you might as well do shorter hops if all you do is attend to takeoff's and landing's. If its not a pond hop then my 777 will be mainly flying domestic in the US.

I understand that people take breaks and they are a really good idea but I'm talking about those people who go away for nearly the entire cruise portion.

Paused on TOD? Who does that

My usual longhaul is "Doing housework/cooking/washing/maybe a little nap" while flying on Vatsim. I usually have a "Really Really Loud modified Private Message ding dong sound" so if an ATC comes online and sends a "contactme" message (or someone randomly sais "Hi") It will be... really loud and obvious ;)

After establishing myself in Cruise at FL3xx (initial altitude) I will then go off to the VNAV/CRZ page and check when my first step climb will be, and then set an alarm (alarm clock/watch/phone/whatever) for that time. By the time the alarm goes off I would then be ready for a step climb which would be enacted. Approaching the end, I'd check top of decent time and then set an alarm for about 20 mins before that so I can get my full approach brief completed before starting down.

This is what I call "being away from the cockpit" (or sleeping in the cockpit). I don't need to be there staring at the screen for hours, and the plane shouldn't miss a step climb.

it also shouldn't pause. ever.

Being on Vatsim I guess the "Able to answer a private message within a few seconds" is a major part of the plan. "Filling out logbook time" isn't, as I'm not in a VA. (No I don't want to be in your VA, I'v been flying on vatsim since 1999 and found that not being in a VA is just fine thanks).

Not saying that people should stare at the screen for hours (I don't do that either), but one should check in about every half hour or so. And don't worry about me asking to join your VA, I'm another freelance pilot with no VA as well but I keep track of things in an online VATSIM logbook.

We have these things called lives. I dont sleep but i go out and do stuff. I don't just sit in front of a monitor all day. I can understand an hour or two but anymore it just feels crazy. Hey its great if you can sit there for 10 hours but dont talk down to those who like to walk away from their computer. Please show some maturity. Thanks and no offence im not trying to start an argument just my opinion.
