Clouds in FS9

Featured Replies

when i download real weather and lets say there are heavy clouds, why is it when i get to a certain altitude the couds become transparent, as if they are not there?

Are you using the default MS real weather or some other weather program such as Active Sky? Next question is, are you using default clouds, 3rd party clouds, weather program provided clouds, some combination of what I mentioned or clouds you may have modified yourself? Are the clouds disappearing when you should still be flying in them or when you would be above them? And, . . . . . do the clouds appear 'normal' from below? Sorry - all questions and no answers for now, but more information will help head in the right direction.

Best regards,

Mel

I am using the default MS real weather. i believe sometime ago i installed some sort of 3rd party clouds, but i'm not sure. i have uninstalled FS9 many times over the years due to pc upgrades etc. the clouds on the ground look great, when i take off they are realistic, but when i get to a certain altitude lets say

fl30000 the clouds become transparent and i can see the terain as if there are no clouds at all. when i desend the terain will slowly becom less transperant until i am back in the clouds. i never get to fly with the white blanket of clouds beneath me. the clouds look normal from below.

Hi Steve. Please set up a flight using one of the default weather themes, I suggest the thunderstorm. Then from the airport you are starting from, instead of taking off, press Y to go into the slew mode and then F4 to raise your aircrafts altitude to approximately 30,000 and then press F2 to stop. Let me know what you see from the side view and straight down. Also are you using FSUIPC? Since your seeing clouds a least at times it is reasonably safe to assume it is not a texture problem. I haven't used the default real weather for years, but as I recall, it tends to behave strangely at times especially without FSUIPC helping to control it. One last thought for now is that your problem may be related to how you have the weather parameters set up in FS9.

Hi.

Setttings/Display/Weather .... you have several options:-

Try Ultra High, 3-D cloud percentage slide bar to 100%, select Detailed Clouds and slide bar to Maximum.

Hope that helps.

Steve,

There is no real reason that the clouds should do what you describe except for in your settings, as 'Appliance' outlines. The clouds are after all just models and textures and are displayed according to parameters set by the user and the weather engine. Make sure that in the FS9 GUI that in: Settings / Display / Weather that Cloud draw distance is set to maximum or at least something reasonably high. If these things have been done then FS may not be saving your changes to the FS9.cfg (especially if your using W7 os and depending on your FS9 installation and UAC settings). You might try locating your FS9.cfg file and renaming it to something like FS9_backup.cfg to force FS to build a new FS9.cfg file and the check your clouds in FS and then adjust weather (clouds) in the GUI.

As per your original post.

What kind of clouds are you seeing? Cumulus, Stratus or Cirrus or combinations? Fishing here, but it may be the cloud type + settings.

If you haven't already you might wish to have a look at:

Best clouds for free IMHO.
