July 19, 201213 yr even a crappy old 1950s glider has a 35:1 glide ratio I wish the gliders I flew had 35:1 ratios! 23:1 baby ol' 2-33's and 1-26's for me. I dualed in an ol L-13 once and was amazed. Need to get back onto the soaring-saddle these days. Patrick Houghton

July 22, 201213 yr Hi! I agree this is not really an emergency landing but a glider landing out. From my relatively short time gliding I learnt that whilst this doesn't happen every day it does happen, though normally in a field and not on a road in the suburbs. He did well to find somewhere to land looking at what was around him when up there. Although I agree he seemed to be coming in very fast when he landed. I was always tought to hold it off as long as possible to land with minimum energy (or something like that!). Here's a working link I think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31HRFNjvxeY One time I was with a guy and we got caught out low and upwind and made a real mess of it and groundlooped but that was it. Also one time my instructor landed out in a golf course with a customer and the golfers didn't even look up from their game and acknowledge him! Many thanks. Pierre
