Ivy Bridge vs Sandy Bridge on Z77

Featured Replies

All else being equal, why not go with the newer chip that unlocks higher memory and PCI-e speeds, two elements which measurably affect flight sim performance? Would I downgrade my processor and have lesser memory and PCI-e performance to do so? No way.

It doesn't "unlock" higher memory nor PCI-e speeds, all it does it bring native support to 1600mhz RAM and PCI-E 3.0.

This means that when you have 1600mhz RAM, you won't have to go to the BIOS and set it to 1600mhz, it is automatically done. Same for over 1600mhz.

On Sandy Bridge, the CPU accepts more than 1333mhz RAM, but the first time your turn on the PC, you gotta go to the BIOS and set your RAM speed.

PCI-e 3.0 gives only about 3% more performance than 2.0, so unless you're using a PCIe SSD (for the bandwith) you won't see any difference.

That said, of course if it's only $10 more go buy it, but I've checked most online shops and it's $50-100 more (2600k vs 3770k)

Ivy Bridge allows access to higher memory multipliers than Sandy Bridge, up to 2800MHz on most Z77 boards, some even higher. PCI-e 3.0 performance gains are hard to quantify, and as we all know, FSX performance in particular is not just about a raw FPS number, autogen pop-in and texture loading are also dependent upon it. Also, Ivy Bridge has been demonstrated to be between 5-15% faster than Sandy Bridge in CPU-bound scenarios, especially FSX. Go read the extensive FSXMark 11 thread for proof.

Max its time to show that you pass 4.9 Intel Burn test , what you show is 3 rows at 4.7 or have

I missed someting.

After you say that à dont do stabilitey tests , I passed 4.8 in Burn Test ,do you really now what tests

I do you, havent avsked me.

Anyway ask before, i show à 4.9 when you do it

I've run at 4.8GHz for now, there's a wall beyond that and it's just not consistently stable in IBT at 4.9GHz. Here's my 4.8 maximum IBT stable run:

Hi Max

Tanks, no hard feelings

I dont prefer IBT , but did a test @4.9ghz but the temps skyrocked.

to do this at @5ghz on wather gone be hard without mod the IHS ( if possible?)

Kind Regards Hasse

Max and Hesse,

I have a question for you guys. Did you'll have SB before this? IF so how far were y'all able to OC that?

Manny

BTW Santiago lives in Argentina. The price varience he sees between SB and IB may change the equation for him. Santiago, here in the US ,there is no price dfference between the SB2700K and the IB 3770K.

I kept pumping Vcore into the chip chasing stability - turns out I don't need as much as I thought. The issue is with RAM speed and timings so for now I've backed RAM down to 2000MHz, will play with timings later to loosen them up a bit and get the clock speed back. Got 4.8 stable at 1.35-1.36 and was able to back PLL down to 1.62-1.63. I'm going to shoot for 5 GHz again, I'm pretty confident about hitting at least 4.9 now for 24x7 operation, wish me luck!

Manny, good point about prices outside the U.S., I often forget about that.

The big problem is the memcontroller i prefer high speed on mems , playing with IBT @4.7

And 2800 cl 11 that combo i not get stable.

The 4.8 and 4.9 ar 2666 cl10

Cheers Hasse

The memory controller is definitely the limiting factor once you deal with the heat. I believe I now have it stable at 4.9, just testing RAM stability at 2200 CL10. Nothing great there, but faster than 2000 CL9 at least. Will probably swap out this RAM for something in the 2600 range, though I'm tempted to pick up some cheap Samsung 30nm RAM and see how far it will go. Lots of people hitting 2400 and higher, some reports as high as 2800. Here's a shot of IBT maximum at 4.9:

Actually I was checking newegg and Amazon. I don't buy expensive stuff here (such as videocard or CPUs) cause they cost the double. I only buy cheaper stuff like case and RAM here.

Micro Center is the vendor of choice for those of us lucky enough to have one nearby. They routinely beat all online retailers CPU prices. My 3770k was $289, for example.

WOW! Max...awesome! :)

Your VID is less than 1.3v What voltage did you set?

5GHz!

For operation @ 5GHz I have it set to about 1.5V BIOS, looks like it hits about 1.52 according to CPU-z.

Very impressive, good work

Most admit one thing, you get me to remove the IHS

could never dream that INTEL could do crapp like this, one thing is AMD Operton back in the

middle of 2000.

I am at work comming home to the weekend, doing some fast test yesterday evning i have only Artic Silver.

but now it handles the heat much better at high voltage.

My CPU water block is a Zalman from 2004 orderd a mordern one think that old block is not as good as the new ones.

Not stable @5 yet run 7rows at IBT then it be unstable, dont know if its the mems or Waterblock?

Kind regards Hasse
