My FSX and Windows 7 64 bit...

Featured Replies

Hello

Just start again and install to C:\FSX

You will save yourself a world of pain going forward. as you have found out many addons cannot write their data files with FSX installed in the default location.

Some folk are in denial about this, but that just means they haven't yet installed an addon that has issues with the extra security measures MS placed on Program Files (x86) folder

I run win7 x64 and I installed everything in FSX default x86 location. I even installed Prepar3D in the x86 folder without issues. If you won't take the time and understand how to install properly, it has nothing to do with denial.

All my add ons work graet in the x86 folder.

I just wanted to mention my successes with FSX and FSX addons and Windows 7, 64 bit as I don't want many to believe FSX won't work properly in the default location.

Hello Jim

It's not that FSX won't work correctly from the default location, it will

The problem lies with pre Vista/Win7 programs that need to exchange data and which are not written to read and write that data from the virtual store.

If you never run any of these programs and have installed FSX for "any user" you will never encounter an issue, however one day you may want to run one of these programs, only then will you realise why many third party developers recommend installing FSX outside of the default location.

All my add ons work graet in the x86 folder.

But one day you may come across one that will not, what then?

See what PMDG have to say about it

http://forum.avsim.n...tration-limits/

And many other third party developers, but what would they know.

All my add ons work graet in the x86 folder.

Why risk it when its so simple to install outside programs file? Most if not all developer HIGHLY recommend it. Specially in a networked environment using simconnect or wideFS. You WILL find out why then as I have experienced it! As Maddog stated, these people are not STUPID!

Hello

From Page 11 of the PMDG 737 NGX Introduction pdf

"Do not install FSX into the default installation directory:When

installing FSX, do not install the simulator into the default

directory that it offers. Instead, customize the directory to

something different. (Example: C:\FSX) This will eliminate

problems that many users experience resulting from various

Windows protection and permission issues forced upon programs

placed in the Program Files and Program Files (x86)

directories."

I am happy to go with PMDG on this one,

No those people are not stupid. The developer recommend it to people that don't how to access or apply permissions to folders and drives in Win7. I have the PMDG NX installed and it works great. I've been running FSX since it's release and its been installed to it's defaul location and I run over simconnect and FS wide with addons (AS2012, FS realtime , RC4 and many more). It's basiclly up to you how to install, but don't say FSX wont work in the defaut x86 folder, just say you don't understand how to set up win7 properly.

hello

So you are saying to set windows 7 up properly with FSX we should mess with permissions.

Since a lot of us are apparently doing this all wrong the floor is yours:

Teach us what we need to know, even the Devs might learn something here.

All yours Mack, im never too old to learn something

On my mian "C" drive where FS9, FSX, resides, right click, scroll to properties, select sharing tab. Then choose advance sharing, At top check box that say "Share this folder". Then below choose"Permissions". When Permissions for C popup, Highlight everyone. If everyone is missing, hit the add ket and type everyone, then press ok. Once everyone is highlighted, look below and check all 3 allow boxes and apply then ok. Now you're C drive is setup. Try this then I

ll go thru setting up your individual Flight Sim folders. It's basically the same procedure.

Also if your using a network, you must map your drives and folders so simconnect or FSwide can accsess your local roaming and documents\FS folders.

Hello Mack,

So you are happy to share the root of your drive and give full read/write permissions to "everyone" ?.

I would rather not thanks, if that's Ok

It's up to you if you just want read, write or full control, your choice. No one else have access to my computer so yes thats what I choose. But if you're feeling paraniod about someone accessing your computer, it can't be done unless you allow them to.

Only you can make changes that you want.

Everyone is just termology microsoft use to allow everyone on your network to be able to access and share files. My network is secure so no have access except me. Microsoft made Win 7 more of a manual setup by user than it did with winxp. But it's all the same.

Soooo... give the 'Everyone' user share access to your "C" drive.... and you're connected to the internet?

Bill - the 'everyone' access might be fine for a particular part of a Web server, or the front end to a database server, where a firewall or pair of firewalls, a DMZ and some security servers in there might be ok, but please don't tell Avsim users - some of whom are quite naive in the world of pc security - to share their C drive with 'everyone'.

The only user having access to your personal pc should be an 'Authorized User', and that should not be to the root of C drive.

Hello Mack

So with the root of the drive given full read/write permissions, no one can alter anything unless you allow them ?.

You do realise that by setting your permissions in this way has just given anyone who wants to, full access to your drive, with the ability to manipulate your files in whatever ways they want.

When you click on a link in your browser and a rogue script executes, you have just invited them in.

Even sites like this are not immune :

Dude I've been running my system since Win7x64 was RTM and when it went public. No one can access my system unless I allow them to. I don't use UAC which is useless and a pain in butt and another cause of software installation issues. All it is what microsoft installed to stop the average, unaware, everyday user from getting virues, malware and installing corrupt sofeware from unknown fraud attackers. It's just a blanket for the average everyday user. I don't need their protection. I'm a everyday power user. But you ask how to use to install your FS software. I told you. Your chioce.

Bill, would you not expect that the advice given to users on this site, should be couched with a little integrity and a sense of responsibility? Not everyone here is an experienced "Power User", in fact, judging by the daily number of basic beginner questions we get, it's a pretty large section of the Avsim audience who are here for some help and a shoulder to lean on. Those folks won't know you from Adam, and they may well be influenced by your words - and your advice is plain wrong.

Do not ever share your C drive with 'everyone'.

Again your choice, your system. I would never give out advice to harm anyone system. I've been a member here for a long time. And I always done the best I can do to assit and help. But again if you dont understand win7 your call.

Everyone= everyone on your network. Not the public. Try understanding win7 permissions. You can allow C drive to everyone, but you can set it to hide and not allow access to indiviual files you don't want access to. Right now I'm beta testing Win8 for microsoft. Even though it's somewhat differnet it's setup and permissions are basically the same. It uses the same patform as win7 which is the best thing that microsoft released since WinXp.
