ASE too slow to apply overcast

Featured Replies

hello everyone,

today I was flying to an airfield with a overcast at 3500ft and low visibility below it (2 km i guess) and as I was passing by to then turn back to capture the ils of the active runway, I was only seeing a few clouds here and there. actually so few that I could see everything on the ground clearly, although the weather report in the ase was indeed showing an overcast and low visibility.

Only when I was almost at 2000ft, the fog started to appear and the settings from ase being applied regarding the clouds and visibility.

my question is this. what can be done to improve the overcast so when I fly above it I can't see the ground? why took it so long to the clouds layers to be applied?

cheers,

Daniel

I've had the same problem with AS2012. Also, when the AS radar shows storms, I've had clear skies and lightening that emits from a clear sky. Weird.

Thank you.

Not sure if its me but I feel like theres never enough clouds.....

A lot of problems when trying for a heavy overcast are more related to the FSX (FS-9?) wx generation programming, not the Active Sky product. FSX and FS-9 pretty much will never deliver a 100% overcast like we so often want.

How do you reach such conclussion? I can manually set an overcast on FSX and it will depict it just fine, or CB up to 40,000ft. But ASE seems to fall short in these areas. I am on MDSD (dominican republic) where ASE says the Wx is Haevy Rain, overcast - but not a drop on my windshield. I set Wx to FSX downloaded and I got the rain, etc etc.

How can I reach such a conclusion?? It's easy. It's called having asked the same question over the years, recieving a well reasoned answer from those who know more than I and then follwing posts in which the same question is asked repeatedly, again over several years, and always finding the same answer.

I have used Active Sky products since AS 6.5 in something like 2005 all the way through the AS2012 with the latest service pack today as we speak. If you are able to achieve full 100% overcast and can generate T-storm activity all the way to FL400 please post your settings so we all can follow your lead. Having a setting that will enable cloud coverage to FL 400 is especially interesting. I've only ever read of FS-9 and/or FSX being able to generate coverage to about FL200. But what do I know.

set up your cloud layers, the weather you are trying to load could exceed the amount of layers you have set, stock fsx weather has full access to all layers and a default active sky i think has 6. Ive just started using 13 layers and the results seem to be great so far although i have not tested in full overcast conditions

If that does not work then find an area that has full overcast based on the weather reports and play with the cloud settings until you get what you are looking for, if it still does not happen then there could be a small amount of missing weather data from active sky

Hi Dan,

If someone would educate my dumbass on how to post pictures, I gladly will post pix of CB up to 40,000.

Not saying you are not seeing what you say you are seeing - just that if the problem were universal with AS, then everyone would have the problem. Since that is not the case, it must be something specific to your setup that triggers the issue. Play with your settings in AS. Check your FSUIPC version and settings. Lot's of things that can easily affect what you see.
