constant fsx freezes which results in ctd

Recommended Posts

good day folks,

As the itle suggests i keep getting the "fsx has encountered a probem and needs to close"

Ive tried the automation.dll fix (even though im on xp32 ), as most of the time the crashes occur when either right or left clicking drop downs or view change etc.

This crashed even when ony fsx is running with no addons.

Ive tried checking the minidump, and although i have checked the settiins - enabe minidump log reporting, which is checked i cant find out why its crashing,

Any help would be appreciated, - memtest results are ok, hdd seems to be ok, temps are fine,

Intel e6850, p5n32esli (bios 1903), xms 2048 6400c5 ram 4g(2X2) nvidia gts 8600,

Any questions please ask, as i need to keep this pc till jan till i can build my own rig

Addons i normaly use, pmdg md11, utx europe.

regards

paul

Edit, just to add, graphice card uses 80-85% max, all updates, xp sp3(tried jsut sp2 also) fsx sp2

You need to provide us with CTD info from your Event Viewer. For every crash, an 'event' is created. To learn more about the Event Viewer, click on the Start button and, then click on Help and Support. Once open, type Event Viewer in the search box. You'll receive several links about the event viewer and a link directly to your system event viewer. Once you open up Event Viewer, open up Windows Logs. Click on Application. In the middle column you'll see all the Events that occurred with Applications on your system. In the right hand column, click on Find... then type FSX. This should bring up the first FSX crash, click next and it will show you the next FSX crash. You want the latest crash. Once you find it, look in the right hand column and click on Copy and select Copy Details as Text. Then come back over here to this forum and paste the information into a new post here.

In addition, do you have the /3GB switch installed (so that FSX can use more than 2GB).

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply, having had a look around here, i realise i should have done this already, i'll do that next time it does crash.

I dont know what you mean with the 3gb switch, i always assumed fsx can use up to 3.5gb, can you tell me more about it?

Regards

Paul

The Event Viewer records every crash or issue with your computer since the day it was turned on so you should have all the crash events. Here's more info on how to employ the /3GB switch and why: http://forum.simflight.com/topic/55994-set-fs-and-winxp-to-use-the-3gb-switch/.

Hi jim,

Thanks again for your help,

Right ive had a read through, and ive got to where i download fsx's "setup manager.exe" and ran it, but when its run nothing happens, no shortcut - nothing in programs etc etc,

Also when i scroll down that page i dont see anywere where it says "do this for fsx" it all seems to be for fs9.0/1.

More help here would be geatly appreciated - although i guess i would be better waiting till i got a few more ctd's before i go about changing things?

Regards

Paul

You shouldn't have done that. That's a program to replace bglman.dll for FS Dreamteam products. Nothing to do with the /3GB switch. If you have any FS Dreamteam products installed on your computer, you should go to that site and download the latest version of the Addon Manager. What is important is right after that under Considerations for use of the "/3GB" switch in Windows XP. It's a good read BUT I apologize as it is pretty convoluted with garbage other than how to employ the /3GB switch. I have a Windows 7, 64 bit OS and it does not require this switch as 64bit OS's handle memory much better than back in the XP days. I'm looking for a better thread to provide you with exactly how to install this switch as everyone who owns XP, 32 bit should have (I believe MUST have) this switch installed. Otherwise you are going to get a lot of Out of Memory crashes unless you keep your FSX settings down to near the default. The original link I provided above, although convoluted, it has links to what the lead developer of FSX had to say about memory usage in FSX. So going through the info at this link will give you a lot more info on why you MUST install this switch. Even for Windows 7, 32 bit and Vista, 32 bit, this switch should be employed.

Here's a better link - http://www.vfxpedia....=FAQ/3GB_Switch and here is a video on how to do it -

. NickN, the FSX guru has this article called Setting Up FSX and Tuning it and, under FSX installation, he talks about the /3GB switch and how to install it. He emphasizes the fact that only FSX SP2 has the capability of seeing more than 2GB of memory. You can view his article here - http://www.simforums...topic29041.html. The info is near the top under FSX installation.

Jim

Hi jim, thanks again,.

I am running fsx xp2, so does this mean that i dont need this switch?

If i must still have this then i wi have to be careful then as i dont have my xp disc and key(it was given to a computer geek to reinstall windows for me one day last year and he has yet to return it.

I vaguely remember seeing this article by nickn a while back but it kinda just flew over my head - as i didnt understand it i thought i would try other routes.

I'll have another look at it.

Kindest regards

Paul

It only works in FSX if you have FSX SP2 installed (or Acceleration). It is safe to install if you follow the directions posted in the video or at that link and/or on NickN's website.

Ahhh i see,

I will give it a try tomorrow, and post back with how i get on (if i do that is) im also having a few overclocking issues, which im seeking help from overclockers also.

To add, - i also get random bsod's(very common until i put a new cooler on today) various, page file in no paged area, - driver irq not less or equal, - im guessing my hdd is on its way out, as sometimes when the pc boots up, it tels me an msconfig file is missing or something along those lines, tbh i dont think the pc will last till january(im still overcllocking so that i get a better idea what im doing for my new rig.)

Kind regards once again

Paul.

You certainly have many issues. The msconfig issue can be easily fixed by shutting down everything that you have set to start up when the computer is turned on (well, you didn't necessarily set that but computer programs that you install will set it up so they automatically are turned on when you first start up the computer and let it know you are still using their software (one example). They can bring systems down and they really are not needed. What happened is that you probably uninstalled a program and it the item wasn't removed from startup so it's looking for it. Here's how to fix: Click on the Start button, then go to Accessories and click on Run. Once open, type msconfig in the box and hit enter or ok. Once open, click on the Startup Tab. Uncheck everything that is checked. Click okay. You can restart your system to see if the problem still exists.

The driver irq not less or equal indicates a hardware problem. Maybe a sound card or video card is not properly seated on the motherboard or is about to crash. BSOD's are serious indicators something is seriously wrong with your hardware. It could be your HDD too but think you would have trouble starting up your system if that was the case. Anyway, you should make sure you have backed up your personal stuff like photos before the crash is permanent. There's a program that can diagnose Blue Screen errors and tell you what drivers were involved. It might show you what hardware device is having the problem. The program is called BlueScreenViewer and you can get it at the following link: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html.

A lot of people try to move their page file to another HDD and I understand that won't work well. The experts down in the Hardware forum can probably help you with overclocking. You will need to let them know your system specs plus the name of the motherboard. The hardware forum has some actual overclocking photos showing settings, etc., that might be helpful. They usually deal with the latest and greatest systems though. You might be better off going to Google.com and asking Google: how do i overclock my xp system with a (name of motherboard) installed. Google is a great search engine and you can ask it anything just like you were at a computer tech shop asking a technician what's wrong with your system.

Best regards,

Jim

Hi, jim,

Thanks for taking the time to write all that, im aware of msconfig, its on selecteed startup, so that only the vare essentials are running on startup, and im savvy enough when installing things to "deselect" the rubbish, i always run ccleaner when uninstallin things, and i also o to regedit to be sure no keys are left.

Driver irq is a problem i have had for a few years now, and have yet to come up with what was causing the issue.

Last night while having one last attempt, when the pc crashed, it came on running a chdsk, well 2 to be rpecise, a small one (approx 5 mins) then another which lasted about 10-15 mins - not the usual 1hr that it normally takes( this process has happened a couple of times over the last 6 months or so.

I will go download bluescreenviewer and post back with what i have at next crash.

As for the clocking, - im aware i shouldnt really be doing it while im having all these issues but i think im aware enough of knowing the difference between overclocking crashes and fs(system) crashes - - ive been sekking help from overclockers . net, as i beieve they will have a vaster audience which is more likely to have came across my chip and board(as they are pretty old now).

Ive got my photos backed up, as everything else(all paywares etc etc i can redownload(hopefuly))

I'm going to remove my chip, reseat my evo,, remove and plug in my sound/grahics cards later in the event of more crashes during the course of today,

Its just annoying that i get a good stable overclock@3.7+ yet now i cant get past 3.6 with temps @ low 50's

Many thanks again jim, i appreciate all this.

Paul

This indicates a problem with the USB ports (a hardware problem). Check out the following link to see if this will fix this problem - http://www.ehow.com/how_6941891_repair-usbport_sys-windows-xp.html.

Mini082512-02.dmp 25/08/2012 22:06:20 NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM 0x00000024 0x001902fe 0xb34e5770 0xb34e546c 0xf7b77c92 Ntfs.sys Ntfs.sys+25c92 NT File System Driver Microsoft® Windows® Operating System Microsoft Corporation 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2111) 32-bit ntoskrnl.exe+606c2 Ntfs.sys+dff0 Ntfs.sys+54588 ntoskrnl.exe+a3eb C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini082512-02.dmp 2 15 2600 90,112

For this error you need to check your disk for problems with the volume. Here's a link on how to employ the chkdsk /f program - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265.

The errors reported in your most recent crashes are the same as those above. I would do the chkdsk first, then try to repair the usbport system.

Jim

Hi jim,

I regularly do a chkdsk(sometimes it does it automatically( one of the reasons i think my hdd is about to explode))

Although i dont do the chkdsk/f part i just do the chkdsk from "right click local disk©>tools and error checking" is there a difference between this way and the chkdsk /f part?

Ill do the usb part as advised and will let you know how i get on.

Im due you a drink or 2

Paul
