MD-11 Start Up Characteristics?

Featured Replies

Well, I think I'm about to pull the pin and go get the MD-11(F). One question, when the engines spool up on start up, do they come up nicely like on the NGX, as opposed to what the default aircraft do where they go to full power before settling back into idle? I love the NGX start up - most realistic I've come across yet. Hopefully the MD-11 behaves the same way?

Thanks much!

Yes. The engines start up one at a time and it's even more satisfying because there are 3. I really enjoy starting up procedures of the MD-11. The MD-11 may not be as sophisticated as the NGX but, for me at least, it has an intangible ingredient which I like to call panache or character! At first I wasn't overwhelmed by the MD-11 but it quickly grew on me and became one of my favortie

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for this. I know they start one at a time, but the default jets spool up to full power before settling back to idle, which isn't correct of course. Do the MD-11 engines slowly spool just to an idle setting as the real engines do? Thanks much

PMDG wouldn't copy the default, trust me. They start up like they're supposed to. It seems to me just like it does in the NGX. You follow the N2 number before applying fuel and watch it spool up

Super! I know they wouldn't intentionally follow the default, but for quite a long time nobody knew the way around that little FSX bug, so earlier on they wouldn't have had much choice. Appreciate the info Phillip - thanks a bunch

Just remember to put the fuel at 15% N1 (per manual). The sound files are not made for turning the fuel on at 20% making the sound lag a bit. But at 15% it sounds awesome!

Roger that Manfred. Thanks much

The rumbling sound of the engines starting is great. I love that part :)

BUY IT!!!!!!!

You will not be dissapointed. It is still one of my favorite, if not just about the only long haul aircraft that I fly. I could care less about carriers not using it anymore, I still fly Delta and all the other online with it.

If you add the TSS soundpack for them with it....starting the engines with speakers a little high and the bass from the subwoofer on, it will rock your world. Such a great plane....you will enjoy it for a long long time.

The engines start up just as every other video I have watched from RL.....it is classic PMDG quality, believe me.

Thanks guys, appreciate the input. I'll probably pass on the TSS as the video's I've seen of the PMDG machines are extremely accurate in terms of engine sounds (I just hadn't heard a full spool up from stopped, thus the question). So I'll go with the default sounds for it, but yeah, it's definitely on my list now (probably by the weekend ).

I saw in a cockpit video of the MD-11 (martinair)(TVV I think it was, or something similar) that fuel was introduced at 25%, instead of 15%. Must be company procedure :)

It's more likely to be an engine variant, as that would determine proper procedure. Adding fuel too soon or too late can cause "complications" IRL, such as a fire, hot start or a failed start. They may have had a different engine on it to what PMDG has.

Got it ^_^ . Looks sweet! Will fly the tutorial this weekend. Looking forward to it!

I have suggested this to many persons and everyone found it a very good guide. http://support.precisionmanuals.com/KB/a18/tips-for-boeing-pilots-learning-the-md-11.aspx

Are you sure that you aren't mixing it up with a 737? As far as I remember in the ITVV they started the engines at positive oil pressure. Might be wrong though...

Thanks for the link Manfred! That's great and will help a lot.

One thing I am having a problem with is downloading the tutorial 1 file. I get a message from Adobe Reader saying the file is damaged and cannot be repaired. Not sure if it's just at my end. Now I think I have it at home ok, so it may not be a problem, but I'll raise a ticket with PMDG just in case so they can fix it if need be.
