CPU Throttling using Prime95

Featured Replies

I run about 1.5V for stability @ 4.9GHz on my chip with 2.6GHz RAM. Voltage does kill chips, but temperatures are a good indicator of how safe a given voltage is. If you can run IBT @ 90 C or less, you're probably OK.

I tried, hotest core was 93c. In fsx i have max 69c at 5GHz. 4.9 seems to be much safe, well I'll think about it. Thanks

Looks like I have a MB issue.

Core temp is reading 60-70C while the motherboard utility monitor is giving me 100C. Maybe that's why the throttling happens. Which one do I believe?

That would definitely explain the throttling. Did you de-lid and use liquid metal?

I did not de-lid. Just artic silver for the thermal paste.

There's your problem. Overclocking Ivy hits a brick wall at 4.4-4.6GHz unless you de-lid.

It was a MB problem.

Just switched MB and started a Prime95 test. So far so good at 1 hour. All temps looking very good no throttling so far.

I'd like to thank everyone for their input in this matter. It was in fact a motherboard sensor problem that caused all my throttling problems.

Currently, I'm running at 4.7Ghz with 1.345 (CPU-Z) Core voltage very stable. I'm very happy the way FSX is running at the moment. :Big Grin:

I did hit the proverbial "wall" of Ivy Bridge. At 4.8 I can get it stable but 100C temps spikes during stress tests scares the hell out of me. I'll quit the overclock for now and enjoy FSX.

Again, thanks to everyone.

Did you de-lid? It's really not all that hard and it will drastically improve temperatures.

Not yet. I will do it down the road, but in the meantime, I'm enjoying what I have. :Big Grin:

Those extreme temps could potentially expedite the electromigration process. I would recommend de-lidding asap...
