DX10 Preview FSX Opens on Wrong Monitor

Featured Replies

I have two monitors... one a 30 inch Dell (60Hz) and the other a 22 inch Alienware (120Hz). FSX starts up on the main monitor (30" Dell) but when I load FSX, it opens on the secondary monitor and my main monitor goes black. The opening screen on the 22" monitor is like it was opening on a 30" monitor but on the smaller 22" monitor so everything is huge when FSX first starts up and I definitely can't see the scenery in front of the aircraft until I click on the monitor and reset the size. I then have to go to windowed mode on the secondary monitor then drag the screen over to the main monitor then Alt-Enter to go to full screen and all is well. Has anyone else experienced this? I ask this as I usually get a StackHash error when closing FSX in DX10 mode. If I leave FSX on my secondary monitor then close FSX, the StackHash error does not occur. I also do not get the StackHash error when in DX9 mode. Only when I drag FSX over to the bigger monitor. Just wondering if anyone else using two monitors are experiencing this too and if a fix has been found. I have done a Google search on this subject and this has been an issue since DX10 preview was released and with multi-monitors. Maybe the wideview program would fix it?

Best regards,

Jim

Just a couple of places, Jim, (sorry if you've already been to them) have you seen

video? You might have been here or here, and Another

In a similar vein - I use the Matrox TH2G system , and it was the absolute B******D of a system to set up when new. It's fine now, but it used to always switch any game to the left-most monitor all the time, and it took (I will bet) a year before I found an answer to the convoluted Matrox setup. Eventually they fixed it - firmware and driver files, but oh what a B***H it was.

Hi Paul,

Although interesting sites on setting up multiple monitors (the first link was the best!), it doesn't solve my problem (or that of thousands of others who might be using DX10 Preview in FSX). In DX9 I have no problems whatsoever with the monitors. FSX starts up on the main monitor and loads up on the main monitor. In DX10, FSX starts up on the Main monitor but loads up on the secondary monitor. I then have to go to windowed mode so I can move the display over to my main monitor. This is only in DX10.

I will try moving different FSX views over to the secondary monitor like in the first video. I have to get to the main monitor first.

Thanks again for you help!

Best regards,

Jim

Are these [Display.Devicexxxxxxxx] entries in each FX9 and FX10 exactly the same? (mine shown here for eg)

[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580.0] OS sees as #1 monitor 1st port

Mode=3840x1024x32 <------ must match otherwise will be switched.

Anisotropic=1

AntiAlias=1

[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580.0.0] OS sees as #2 monitor 2nd port

Mode=1234x5679x32 <------ must match otherwise will be switched.

Anisotropic=1

AntiAlias=1

i.e. The OS will plonk FSX onto whichever monitor it sees here, as the #1 monitor. ie - 580.0 will be the number one monitor, and it's resolution will be 3840 x 1024, whereas the second monitor 580.0.0 will be seen as the #2 monitor.

No. Here are mine:

[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580.0.0] Primary

Mode=2560x1600x32

Anisotropic=1

AntiAlias=1

[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580.0.1] Secondary

Mode=1280x720x32

Anisotropic=1

AntiAlias=1

I've never seen a setup such as yours before (580.0 vs mine 580.0.0).

Best regards,

Jim

Different driver, firwmware, manufacture or date, or rev no, Jim. That's all.

No - I meant:-

Do you have a separate DX9 fsx.cfg?

and

Do you have a separate DX10 fsx.cfg?

If so - are the entries in the two config identical? Same number pointing to the same ports?

Edit - Re the top line - could be because of Matrox, too.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your response. I only use one config. As I have stated elsewhere when the DX10 fix was first released and we were working on the best FSX.cfg for DX10, DX10 works best for me with a very basic FSX.cfg with NO tweaks. Same goes with FS9. The more tweaks, the more time it takes for the graphics card to render. That's why a lot of people see the blue fsx icons all over the place. Monitor one, the 30 inch one points to DVI Port 1 (the one closest to the MB); Port 2 points to the smaller monitor. I saw something in one of the posts over in the FTX forums where DX9 is the 0.0 setting and DX10 is the 0.1 setting.

Best regards,

Jim

Cheesh: what happens when you swap the cables?

LOL! Then monitor 1 becomes monitor 2, etc. I tried that. It's interesting though that the same thing happens when the big monitor becomes the 2nd and the little one becomes the first. It still loads on the little one just as if the cables weren't changed. So I'm suspecting Paul that you have two monitors (your specs show 3) and you are not seeing this problem? Based on my Google searches, everyone who has DX10 Preview enabled and has two monitors AND one video card, this happens. I believe we have almost exactly the same systems except for maybe the monitors. I think I'm going to purchase wideview from Pete Dowson's website and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks again!

Jim

Well I sure hope it fixes it: there's nothing more frustrating that a pc that isn't quite "right". It burns a hole in my skull when something goes awry! :lol:

Wideview won't work either as it requires two PC's. That's a nice setup you have with the 3 monitors. I'm not going to worry about this issue as I see it's not fixable and I have many other things I need to be doing. It doesn't affect the quality of DX10; it's just a bit troublesome to go through the extra steps to get FSX on the main screen in DX10 mode. Thanks Paul for your time!

I'm with Paul,

3 monitors running from the Matrox box as one screen and 4th touch screen running off 2nd port on 680 card.

Just rebuilding system, only DX10 and didn't have to load Matrox drivers. They were automatically located off the webb and installed with all the other USB devices I have.

One problem I did find (old system) was that switching between DX 9 and 10, the FSX config file had extra entries for all the monitors for both systems, I had to make sure to remove the appropriate ones.

Trevor Golding

Wow! Isn't that something! .. and a touch screen too... .What monitors, Trevor? I've been looking to move off the TH2Go, to Nvidia's "Surround" system, but I need the Mini-HDMI-to-DVI connector for the third one. I assume this will work - someone correct me if it won't! The TH2Go is great, except that there's "another box" on the floor/table, with it's power cord. It would be a nightmare if I were a "tidy" person. :lol:
