How Much Should I...?

Featured Replies

How much should I overclock my system? I know the dangers of overclocking, and am wondering how much I should (if I should) without buying any cooling devices. My system specs are over just below my profile pic on this post. Currently, I have somewhat acceptable performance thanks to FSX Booster, ******* tweaks, external limiters, and balanced settings, I'm getting 13 - 15 FPS at a default FSX airport in my PMDG NGX, and settings down just below FS2004 quality (for some reason this is the best it gets :/ which is why im looking to overclock) and about 15 - 20 FPS in the air with PMDG NGX above default scenery. FSX isn't a nightmare to operate, but i would definitely like more performance.

Looking at your specs I'm assuming this is a laptop? If so u are going to be very limited due to cooling and your mobo.

Hot hot hot.....laptops get hot .

If you get some fans underneath it, like cooling pads or similar, I'd say you could give it a small bump to 3.0, but not really more. Laptops aren't made for overclocking!

First your laptop's I5 processor kicks with turbo to 3.2GHz. I don't remember if that is with only one core load, but still I don't think there is much room to be gained there. Youll soon bump into a heat problems as laptops cooling is pretty poor and designed mostly for what it is. Extra heat generated inside the case out of the manufacturers specs can easily cause instability and even may break some your components at least in long term use. Laptops are more like heat enclosurses compared to desktops.

Second, I don't know about your Dell, but there are very few laptops out there which really make processor overclocking possible (outside of the built-in turbo, of course). Overclokcing discrete GPU chips should be possible in most cases, and that is the are where you might get improved results. Still, I doubt it, because CPU is the area in your case where you would gain most, but as I and some else said, your rig being a laptop is a limiting factor.

I use a Logitech Cooling Pad N200 below my i7 laptop. It does make a difference, but to be very honest with you, like Word Not Allowed said, I'd be very carefull overclocking your Laptop.
