October 16, 201213 yr I think the wiki article gives a pretty good summary. It might help to think of instrument approaches as a system with sevral components which work together such as: runway pavement markings approach lighting markers heading (such as localizer) and glideslope radio navs dme radio navs There are other components used by the tower to ensure proper operation such as antenna field monitors and rvr sensors. I think markers came about in approach systems due to the difficulty in determinig distances in aircraft instruments. The marker antenna have a narrow "beam" and so provide a good indication of aircraft distance from the runway threshold. Today with GPS and more widespread use of dme to provide distance information, the markers aren't as needed. Note that dme provides the line of sight distance to the dme transmit antenna, not the "over the ground" distance, that is, it is the slant range. scott s. .
October 23, 201213 yr In regards to the photograph, I think that approach looks fine. Good centering of the localizer and glideslope. Elijah HoytCFI, CFII, CMEL, CSEL, CSES, IFR
