Cloud flickering above mountains

Featured Replies

Where clouds intersect with mountains, there is a terrible flickering along the edge of the cloud/mountain. I have tried changing cloud textures and playing with video card setting but I can't get it to go away. This problem is epecially visible from a distance, above or below the mountains. Closer up the jiggling/flickering stops. Specifically it is the white cloud texture that jiggles like jello along the mountain edge. I have already tried the "SwarmClouds" fix to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't think there is an answer to this one - FSX problem. When ever I fly over mountains, mainly the Alps, I set my cloud base level to above highest mountain, say 10,000 ft. Problem then gone.

Unfortunately this is a limitation in the FSX engine in that it cannot 'blend' the cloud objects into the mountains. The result is you see this ugly flickering as the two objects (the cloud and the mountain) overlap.

The swarmcloud fix is for a different problem, that being the prominent disappearing and reappearing you see of the clouds when you change the view quickly.

Thank you very much for your reply. On one hand it's good to know that it's not just my system, but on the other quite unfortunate as I'm using Opus these days which is producing just amazing weather. It just looks quite terrible jiggling all over the mountains.

Yes, it's a shame, but I guess we just have to live with it. I am using REX coupled with 'ShadeX'. Pretty good effects, as the haze effect in Shade seems to blend well with mountains etc.

When you say "Haze effect" do you mean the fog effect in Shade? I also use shade and like it quite a lot.

wasnt there a fix somewhere like reuse of materials what prevents it ?

Cant remember exactly, buy I have it fixed and dont have them.

here it is..

Thats a completely different problem, as Tom Wright already mentioned in the 2nd reply to this thread. What do_denver2 is talking about the "z-fighting" issues that occur between the cloud textures and mountainous terrain, which there is NO fix for unfortunately.

Sorry, I misread then..

I can't say that i NEVER see it but it is very rare for me now. I USE AS2012 for weather and graphics. Haze layer enabled.

Haven't looked at this for a couple of days, yes, do_denver2 I did mean fog in Shade. Glad you already have it as it seems to help a lot.
