November 2, 201213 yr Austrian names the planes after various locations, such as cities, rivers, mountains, lakes, provinces etc. (for example OE-LNR is named Piz Buin, OE-LBC is called Südtirol/Southern Tyrol, OE-LAT is Thailand) Lufthansa also names its planes after cities, for example there's an A380 named Vienna. Aeroflot gives its birds the names of famous persons. Flo Florian

November 3, 201213 yr Not sure about their present policy but Air France used to name planes : - Caravelles after French "provinces" (regions) : Alsace, Lorraine, Provence etc. - B707s after French "châteaux" (palaces or castles) : Château de Versailles, Châteaux de Chambord, Château de Chenonceau etc. I don't know if the tradition still exits (I'll check). Just checked with a friend. Apparently, the tradition to name a/c at AF was discontinued a few years ago (probably in the mid 90's since some of their first A320s were indeed given city names like "Ville de Paris" (City of Paris) etc. His comment : since most of the time, access is by jetways, reading a name on the fuselage is almost impossible anyway. I am curious about the large US airlines with many hundred planes in their fleets (United, Delta, Southwest etc.) Do they name their a/c (or did they use to do it in the past)? In Europe, I think BA used to name their a/c but couldn't find any recent info on the topic. I found this on a forum post on the net : Quote : In years gone by, all BA aircraft had the following names BAC 1-11 Counties B737 Rivers B747 British Cities B757 Castles B767 European Cities B777 Famous Aviation Related People (I Think) Only 2 or 3 named TriStar Roses I know the names were removed when the world tails arrived, but why not replace the names now the world tails have been removed. Unquote but I don't know if this info is valid/still acurate (and I hope it's not a problem to quote it here). Bruno
