November 19, 201213 yr LOL Waaaaay too many settings indeed!!! BTW I couldn't see a difference at ALL between the quality of both filtering methods... I am mainly going for app controlled and using aniso ingame FSX because Howard reported better performance (or at least less problems) with it. The anisotropic filtering itself is just as good either way.
November 19, 201213 yr Stick with it Jeroen, I would never go back to NI filtering. November 20, 201213 yr Thanks guys. NI Aniso ..... ON 16x FSX Filt ..... As Req Er... why do you thank us for using what we say NOT to use...? LOL ^_^ Right now I am using: NI Aniso ..... Application-controlled, Off [Point] FSX Filt ..... Anisotropic And I am planning to stick with it because Howard told me so. B)
November 20, 201213 yr Could someone please explain the difference between : Off(Point) Off(Linear) DIMITRI
November 20, 201213 yr Could someone please explain the difference between : Off(Point) Off(Linear) Point and Linear are actually two different basic graphic enhancement settings. Setting one or the other (or even choosing a number like 16x) doesn't really matter when you select Application controlled. When you choose User definded/Off then it DOES matter: choosing a number like 16x means you are using User defined and choosing Point or Linear means you are using Off, so no anisotropic filtering but STILL a basic form of enhancement. Point is the lowest form of enhancement so choosing that one is the closest thing to turning everything really 'off' through the driver. Are you still with me here...? ^_^
November 20, 201213 yr Maybe I'll do some tests and post them....... November 20, 201213 yr It's very confusing indeed,Jeroen, and thank you for the explanation. Regards. I think all you need to do Dimitri is set your filtering in Inspector to application controlled. Once this is done you need not do anything else, apart from setting Anisotropic in FSX. So effectively, FSX deals with the Filtering and Inspector looks after the antialiasing  HowardMSI Mag B650 Tomahawk MB, Ryzen7-7800X3D CPU@5ghz, Arctic AIO II 360 cooler, Nvidia RTX4090 GPU, 32gb DDR5@6000Mhz, SSD/2Tb+SSD/500Gb+OS, Corsair 1000W PSU, LG Ultragear 48"4K, MFG Crosswinds, TQ6 Throttle, Fulcrum One YokeMy FlightSim YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@skyhigh776

All I can say Dimitri, is that I have found it improved things considerably in clouds. I was also having issues over water and by switching to FS filtering it has smoothed things out considerably and given a framerate boost too (over water.) I am mainly going for app controlled and using aniso ingame FSX because Howard reported better performance (or at least less problems) with it. The anisotropic filtering itself is just as good either way. For what it's worth fellas, I have Anisotropic turned off in Inspector and controlled in FSX. It has helped enormously with low frames over water, flashing in clouds and altogether smoother flying, and to be honest, although a little, there isn't a lot of difference visually... So i experimented with: Anisotropic filtering setting = Application-controlled ( versus: user defined / off ) Anisotropic filtering mode = Off (Point) ( versus: 16x ) Result: much more water shimmering in lakes or sea and NO difference in smoothness or whatsoever. (it was already very good in general and also above water: close to 30 and 24-29 in heavy stormy dark clouded weather) So i think i stick to the old settings, with ALL Word Not Allowed's settings (in FSX, fsx.cfg AND NI) to the letter except for: LOD_RADIUS is 4.5 (default) FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.20 ( for me better than 0.15, less blurries ) and even: AIRPORT_SCENERY_DENSITY=4 AirlineDensity=31 FreewayDensity=23 GADensity=41 LeisureBoatsDensity=35 ShipsAndFerriesDensity=35 It's amazing how machines can differ since Rockliffe has hardware rather close to mine, even a better videocard (GTX-580 in stead of a GTX-570) ! Look for "My PC" and "My Simulator" ............. With kind regards, Bart S.
November 20, 201213 yr Well there you go Bart, it is as you say, so many differences in systems... cheers HowardMSI Mag B650 Tomahawk MB, Ryzen7-7800X3D CPU@5ghz, Arctic AIO II 360 cooler, Nvidia RTX4090 GPU, 32gb DDR5@6000Mhz, SSD/2Tb+SSD/500Gb+OS, Corsair 1000W PSU, LG Ultragear 48"4K, MFG Crosswinds, TQ6 Throttle, Fulcrum One YokeMy FlightSim YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@skyhigh776
November 20, 201213 yr Commercial Member 16X anisotropic filtering has been effectively "free" on modern GPUs for a very long time now - 5 years+ at least. You're not going to see any drop at all from it, especially for an old engine like FSX that barely utilizes the GPU anyway. I run modern games like BF3 and stuff with 16X AF and there's no hit at all. I explained exactly what the difference is between the filtering modes here a while back - scroll down a bit to the texture filtering section: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/324786-nvidia-configuration-guide-inspector-2xxxx-drivers-version-20-explanations-of-all-settings/ Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
November 20, 201213 yr Result: much more water shimmering in lakes or sea I wonder what exactly shimmers? A specific water animation maybe? Because the only thing that shimmers on my PC is the reflection of the ground. And it shimmers with every possible AF setting I can think of. The water itself doesn't shimmer at all. Maybe you are using something like Sparkling from REX? I can imagine some animations being prone to shimmering!
