Drastic FPS Drop with 2 monitors

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have recently built a very nice FSX PC which is running smooth as silk using Word Not Allowed's excellent tutorials. My primary display is a 27" Asus and I have a spare Samsung 23" which I would like to use for my flight display panels. I can get everything working but with the 2 monitors connected my FPS drop to around 7 from 30. My i5 3570K is Overclocked to 4.6 and I have an Asus GTX660 TI. I thought I would have been able to add a 2nd monitor just to use for displaying the panels with my rig. Have I missed something in one of the Nvidia Inspector settings or somewhere else or is it just too much for my graphics card? I have changed the monitor mode in Inspector to dual monitors, even reset everything else but nothing changes

Just out of curosity. Does it make an FPS difference whether using fullscreen or windowed mode?

are you undocking and dragging to your 2nd screen, its a frame killer

Hi Guys,

I normally fly in VC so I simply click the panel I want then drag it to the 2nd monitor. But even before I do this just with the 2nd monitor connected with nothing on it the FPS drops to 7

Thats the reason I asked fullscreen or windowed mode. I have found fullscreen mode, moving panel windowes will have very little effect performance. Were as windowed mode, undocking and moving panel windows can negatively effect performance. I always run in fullscreen mode so its not such an issue. I found, for the most part, eliminated the windowed mode undocking performance issue by disabling Windows Aero peek. May just have been coincidence.

Thank you for the reply,

I always run in full screen, I have set both monitors up in FSX but when I load a flight in full screen without moving anything the frame rate is sitting at 7 and is basically unusable. If I switch to a windowed mode then the FPS goes up. It seems that trying to run in full screen with 2 monitors just kills the frame rate

Interesting.

Does your cursor spin and shake within FSX? or Are you using the SweetFX tool?

I have a 4 monitor setup (3+1) I need to be in Windowed mode to use the 4th monitor where I can undock instrument panel and I don't suffer this problem. Except when I use the SweetFX.

Yes I am using SweetFX,

I am just heading out for a while so when I get back I will try deleting the sweetFX files and try again

This is weird as I had the exact FSX installed on my iMac through bootcamp and had an external monitor connected for the same thing without any issues. I hope you have stumbled upon something here !!

Hi Manny,

Your a saviour, it was SweetFX. I deleted everything and back unto 30FPS. I probably never would have thought of that.

Thank you
