December 3, 201213 yr We get another tour of a famous Alaskan city. To get the most out of this one, try turning off the hud and markers. Should be a bit more challenging. Enjoy. Thank you. December 3, 201213 yr Author I've got to say that I enjoyed this one. It has a bit of a twist especially if you fly at night without the HUD which is what I did. It's not too far away from the airport, but there are a lot of areas to hide a cache here. One neat thing about this cache is that I had to get pretty close to activate the collection screen. I flew over it at a fairly low altitude and it didn't register. I flew out a bit, did a 180, and landed not far from it and taxied through the marker. It registered just before I got to it. Much fun. December 4, 201213 yr I had another hard time with this one. Since it is supposed to be at Homer, I flew in to the town and looked around. Found nothing anywhere in the urban area. After a while, I decided to fly the Hunt with the Sensor and, after taking a good look at the image, decided the Aerocache must be at Coal Point, not Homer. Like both of you, it would not register for me, so I just landed at Coal Point and taxied up to it. I have been here before and have flown over the area a lot. According to my superficial investigations, Coal Point is a harbor for fishing boats and there are mostly fish packing plants there. Best regards. Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
December 4, 201213 yr Author I guess I liked this one because you had to do a bit of hunting to find it. The marker even looked small until I got fairly close to it and even then it took some work to get it to register. I'd have to rate this as one of my favorites. Thank you. December 4, 201213 yr I also hunted for this one for quite a while, in the dark and snow, buzzing over the several town sections before finally discovering ground zero. (I'd noticed the lit area earlier, but in the dark thought it was across the bay.) And I also had a hard time getting it, but on my third swoop I did manage to grab the cache from the air. This is in contrast to a number of the recent AOTDs that registered while I was still some distance away. I've had a couple that I picked up without ever seeing them, which I really hate. - Peter C http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bob_and_Ray_Show
December 4, 201213 yr I enjoyed grabbing this one too. There are some nice details with some of the boats and buildings, but I wish they could have put more time into detailing the spit. The obvious missing feature is the road that runs out to Coal Point. With my second pass with the CC, low and slow over the water, I was able to get it.
