Switching from AMD to Nvidia...correct way?

Featured Replies

Ok, I just ordered a EVGA GeForce GTX 680 FTW+ 4GB card. I currently have two ATI 5870 1GB cards. So yes I am hoping for much better results when it comes to FSX (especially when there are lots of clouds about).

My question to the community is the proper way for uninstalling the AMD drivers, taking out the old cards, putting in the one new one and then installing the nividia drivers? Should I already have a copy of the latest drivers on my hard drive to select it once the new card in onboard? Will the card auto-install drivers when I first fire up the computer? I have never done a swap from AMD to Nvidia before and I admit I am a noob when it comes to some of this hardware swapping business so any kind of detailed checklist type stuff I can get will be much appreciated. Card should be here in a week or so. Thanks a million in advance.

Congrats.

I did the same swap. I followed BenCap's link and used the driver remover software he recommended. Mind you it is now under a different name. Once that was done I installed the nVidia cards removed my trusty AMD cards and installed the latest drivers. I later discovered Inspector and used Word Not Allowed's guide to set them up.

It is pretty much no fuss, no muss.

The GTX680 FTW+ is considered the "bad boy" of FSX at the moment. Enjoy it!

So, you remove the AMD drivers with that link, then uninstall the ATI cards, install the nvidia card and then finally install the newest drivers. Then install inspector and set up per Kostas guide. Right? Do you have that link you mention?

Remove the ATI drivers, use the cleaner in safe mode, install new card and drivers then follow Kostas guide.

Which cleaner? Sorry to sound daft. Do you have a link please?

It's called driver fusion. Most download sites have it. Just ignore the optional install crap.

Thanks guys. Any helpful hints or things I better do/not do on the hardware swap itself?

Ground yourself, make sure the PC is fully unplugged, and be sure to be very gentle with everything...

Ben,

You shouldn't be telling people to select the Nvidia Chipset cleaning filter - that's for Nvidia's nForce motherboard software, not the video card drivers. Those are fairly old boards, but some people are still using them and it could cause a bunch of problems if they were to manually remove the drivers like that - it'd be hard to figure out what went wrong as well if they didn't know what they'd done.

Also, Driver Sweeper is outdated and no longer being updated to account for what's in the newer drivers - you want to use Driver Fusion at http://www.treexy.com, which is what the program turned into now. (Free version is fine, just make sure it's run in safe-mode and it's up to date)

Eric - uninstall anything related to the ATI/AMD card from Control Panel, then reboot in safe mode and run the Driver Fusion AMD Display cleaning filter. Shut down, install the Nvidia card (PCIe slots have a tab you have to sort of push to the side with your finger to actually release the card from the slot on the mobo), then boot back to Windows in normal mode and install the latest Nvidia driver. (don't use what's on the CD that comes with the card - that's always outdated) Then install Nvidia Inspector and set up the FSX profile according to whoever's guide you prefer.

Got the new card in and OMG is it soooooo much better than those 5870's....dear Lord I wish I did it sooner. Nevertheless FSX is running like silk. Got NI all set up per Ryan and NickN's settings and man oh man is she running like silk. I just need to increase my LOD from 4.5 to 5.5 and all set. Install went like I actually knew what I was doing.....which is amazing unto itself. Thanks for all the help guys. I am currently over Michigan enroute to MSP with my aircraft of choice, the NGX.
