FSX overclocked CPU. Worth it?

Featured Replies

Hello

I'm running FSX, thinking if it's possible to get those nice FPS with the PMDG 737 with complex scenery add-on? I think overclocking may help me here.

My rig:

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k (New cooler needed, i know)

MB: Gigabyte P67A UD4 B3

Ram: 8 Gb G.skill Trident DDR3 1600Mhz (8-8-8-24)

GPU: XFX Radeon HD7770 1GB GDDR-5 Dual fan

PSU: Corsair 450VX Psu

Case: Cooler Master Silencio 650

My i7 is running up to 3.8 at stock speeds, but will overclocking close to 5 ghz improve my FPS much?

not 5, but maybe 4.7G would put it in an upper class, and important to have a good cooler/

then your VRAM is maybe too little... not really, but the HD is not as good as the NVidia

I'd think your video card is a bottle neck nivida cards work alot better with fsx try a 660TI they can be had as low as $250 on newegg also if your only running a 450watt PSU its time to updgrade that to a 650 or 700 watt because your straining you current PSU. Try an OC to 4.2 ghz first thats what my AMD Fx-8350 is running at and its smooth so an intel chip at that speed should blaze!

Yes, your fps will be higher with every higher clock.

For cooling, minimum noctua nh-d14 cooler if you aim for 4.8, 4.9GHz, but corsair h100 is maybe better choice, you can go for 5GHz with this.

PSU - 750W is minimum, and it's good to be "80+ Gold" certified

Graphic card - you need a better graphic card, change it for NVIDIA when you can, and don't buy anything older/below gtx 580

Excepting this upgrade, you need to tune windows 7 64bit like here: http://www.simforums...187.html#198187 (Use it only for windows 7 tuning!)

After that, folow this guide for FSX tuning: http://#####...hardware-guide/

That's all you need for incredibly good performance with NGX and addon airports

You have an unlocked CPU so not overclocking it is a real shame and yes I recon you will see a positive difference if you get your CPU running 1Ghz faster.

I'm not really with the folks suggesting you have to upgrade your hardware, whilst that would be nice - if it's working for you now without any issues there's no reason why it shouldn't work OK if your CPU is running a bit faster. If you were interested you might want to check this PSU calculator - http://www.extreme.o...culatorlite.jsp I put in your rig along with a few other bits & pieces and allowed for your CPU to be overclocked and it suggested a minimum of 350w with reccomendation of 402w so your 450w should be fine.

As for cooling you dont need a top of the range cooler to get 4.8Ghz, I have a mid range Thermalright which is happy to cool my 2700k at 4.8Ghz whilst being stress tested for hours. At the end of the day my CPU never breaks a sweat with FSX or anything else I throw at it so in all honesty you can splash out on a top of the line cooler to see if your CPU could run another 200Mhz faster but in 24/7 usage you're unlikely to ever need it.

Actually there is an odd thing going on..

Some times, it is like some of the small "squares" of textures are lagging. Like they are not loading fast enough. But it only happens in small squares, and can happen in any direction from the aircraft.

Is this caused by the GPU being not fast enough? Cause that would be weired, as it didn't happen with my 9800GTX with 512mb of ram.

I have no clue on what settings to fly with, when it comes to my GPU.

Please help!

Thats an entirely different subject and maybe you would be better off posting in the FSX section with some screenshots of whats happening.

Is this a new build with the ATi card or did you have the Nvidia card installed at any point before the Ati card? i.e. is there a possibility that there may be a graphics driver issue?

You could consider renaming your fsx.cfg file and letting FSX build a new one then using the tweaks here - http://#####.wordpress.com/fsx-software-and-hardware-guide/

I'll do that ASAP but most likely tomorrow.
