WINDOWS/7 : FS9 CRASHES ?

Featured Replies

i did the compatibility thing (to windows/xp, etc.), downloaded video-card driver: any ways to run fs9 on windows/7 ? thanks

To me, it works on Windows 7 x64 with no problem at all! I do not use any compatibility setting other than "run as adminstrator" and "disable desktop composition". Enabling compatibilitity modes (WinXP or WinVista) causes instability to me! Every system is different however!

I agree with the above. That has been my experience too, but in addition to those precautions, I also do not install FS9 in its default location, which on a Windows 7 x64 system would be C:\Program Files (x86) as I have heard both that Windows 7 does not "like" program configuration files located there to be modified and also that some 3rd party addons either will not install correctly there or may not perform as designed. Instead, I install to C:\FS9. If you have, say, a drive D: with plenty of free space, D:\FS9 or even D:\FS2004 should work equally well. Having done all of that, I've found that FS9 works at least as well on Windows 7 x64 as it ever did on Windows XP. If it doesn't for you, your system must have issues of some kind. I would doublecheck to make certain you have the correct video driver for your system, also the correct audio driver. If those are correct, you might have an improper virtual memory setting, or perhaps a bad stick of RAM in your system. It is not uncommon for FS9 to expose problems like that, which could otherwise go unnoticed for many users, since it is extremely memory-intensive and is constantly moving very large amounts of data in and out of RAM.

Hope this is of some help to you.

For me, FS9 runs extremely well in Win7 x64. Haven't had even a hint of any issues at all, completely stable with never anything done in regards to compatibility settings.

You've mentioned crashes - where is it crashing? At start up, while flying, choosing a plane?

FS 2004, FSX, (and everything else!), on Windows 7 32bit*, installed in Program Files, with 2.5 GB Memory, and full Admin control.....

...never any problems whatsoever!

* Win 7 32 bit; to run all my old 8/16/32 bit software and hardware... :Big Grin: ...!

I run FS9 on Win7 x64 without any issues, as well. Sounds like it is either an administrative privileges issue or FS9 errors.

I also do not install FS9 in its default location, which on a Windows 7 x64 system would be C:\Program Files (x86) as I have heard both that Windows 7 does not "like" program configuration files located there to be modified and also that some 3rd party addons either will not install correctly there or may not perform as designed.

i'd previously read that also. my previous configuration had FS9 and FSX on a separate hard drive. Several months ago I added a 1.5TB HDD as my primary OS drive, reinstalled FS9 and FSX into their default locations (program files (x86) ) and I've had no problems at all. I've got hundreds of add-on's and have experienced no problems whatsoever.
