FMC on iPad (again)

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

After numerous attempts to get 'Airdisplay' to work on a stable basis I just gave up to have my FMC relocated to my ipad.

Today however, one of my friends showed me his ipad connected to his PC by means of another little app called 'Xdisplay'.

You can find the webpage here:

http://www.splashtop.com/home

There is a demoversion that works for about ten minutes at a time so that is what I did today.

And guess what... it works. And I found that the app at the moment only costs about 5 dollar.

There is hardly any loss (1) of framerate, is, as far as my testing reached today, quite stable so for now I think I have spent

my 5 dollar wisely.

Tomorrow I will try a complete flight.

I would like to add that when I initially used this app a few months ago I couldn't get the iPad held in portrait mode to match the on screen FMC keys with the actual touch points on the iPad. There was an offset down and to the right by a few cm. In landscape position it worked well but the FMC window was too small to fit fully in the Ipad.

I mentioned this in a email to the devs of this app, to which they promptly replied "our next update will fix this". A couple of weeks later and in the next update this was fixed and it works perfectly. The only thing to know is you must run FSX in windowed mode the whole time. Cheaper then buying a FMC panel and it means I have a 737, 777, 747 (PMDG) covered plus anything else I may choose to buy.

Can the NOOK be used instaed of an Ipad? I have a NOOK that I really don't use.

Hi Luc,

Just put Redfly Screenslider on an Android Samsung Note 10.1 running jellybean 4.1.2 to do the same and FSX keeps shutting down on me when sliding the FMC over to the tablet. Need to work on the settings but the app does work nicely over local WiFi. Would like it to work over a usb cable instead as Idisplay does.

May need to borrow the Mrs' Ipad 4 when flying....LOL!

I hope this post keeps going as this is a great use of touch tablet technology!

More on my testing with Redfly Screenslider.....evidently the video driver the app uses on the PC is not liked much by either FS9 or FSX but you can override and run your simulator. Whats important is that you run it in a windowed mode and undock whatever window (in my case the FMC or GPS) you wish to slide over to the tablet. After following these simple steps, the app worked great!

Having said that, I was not impressed by the speed or functionality of the touch. The touch simply places the cursor on the spot you touch and then achieves an equivalent press of the mouse. The speed is off, often times you have to wait a fraction of a second for the cursor to catch up. After working on an FMC the lag becomes annoying. Although it can be done.

Screenslider costs $0.99 USD from the google app store and the PC software is free. Warning though, touch capability requires Screenslider Pro for $4.99. I am running a 30-day demo of the pro version. Hope this helps some of you thinking about using your tablets.

Hello again,

After using Xdisplay and splashtop for two weeks now, I came to the conclusion that this is a winning combo if you want to slide your fmc to the ipad.

One remark though.

Always start Xdisplay AFTER starting FSX! If you reverse the startsequence, panning in the cockpit gets jerky and framerates drops. But when you start fsx first, all is well.

Only windowed mode.  IIRC it is something being worked on.
