Taxing with 1 engine?

Featured Replies

Hello!

The other day wanted to make a fast taxi to test Opus camera movement. I started the Left engine and was ok. released the brakes, the chocks and the GPU and applied throttle. Nothing the plane didn't move.

Only when I started the second engine I could move.

I thought that maybe it was because I had to unlock it, so pull the left throttle on another session with just the left engine running. I couldn't unlocked it becuase the other engine was not running...

mmmm.. is it possible? In reality sure yes.. but here? How?

Thanks!

Did you remove the start locks?

Works perfectly for me:

set parking brake

remove chocks

Start left engine,

turn gnerator on

disconnect gpu

remove start lock

ensure condition levers are at taxi

then away you go, just takes a tad more throttle so you need to be extra careful of the egt.

but how remove the start lock? if the right engine is off, I just pulled the left engine to the reverse position, then up again to iddle. That didn't remove the start lock.

I should make with the right? still has not started so I would need the start lock in the right, wouldn't I?

But I tried to pull the throttle (right) to reverse and then to iddle. No voice saying "removed start lock"

FO calls "Start locks removed"... you only get that callout if BOTH are removed. Obviously that's not the case here because only one engine is running, so you won't hear the callout, even if the start lock on the left engine has been removed.

SO.. if one engine is running, and I try to unlock the start locker.. I won't be able.. so I cannot taxi with one engine?

BrasiliaNick said that he could.. so he could unlock the start lock with only one engine running. I cannot unlock it. with the left engine running only.

No; you can remove the start lock like normal, but you won't hear the call out.

Heres a dirty little video of how to do it:

As always, with all my videos, 1080p

Thanks to the video! There is a doubt I have. You unlocked the locker with both throttles back. Seems that the only that unlocks is the right throttle because I tried doing only with the left and didn't unlock.

If you unlock with the right that is stopped maybe you won't be able later to start the engine because it is feather? So you have to unfeather, so to do it you will need to put to reverse again the left engine (that is running..

The idea was to unlock the left engine, with the left throttle lever if it is possible. I couldn't.

I just tried it with moving the left throttle lever only via mouse in the vc....and it works. I just happened to have both throttles tied to 1 throttle quadrant axis

Are you moving it all the way into full reverse to unlock?

While you can get away with this in MSFS, real world taxiing on one engine is tricky. It is easy to turn in the direction of the dead engine but trying to turn in the direction of the prop providing thrust is tricky because the thrust is working against the turn. I learned this after and in flight engine failure and found that if I slightly speeded up before the turn then pulled power (torque) back to idle I could then coast through the turn; however, if the running engine was anything above idle the plane slimply would not turn towards it.
