January 31, 201313 yr I read (may mis-read!) ages ago that a DVI graphics card cannot work with an HDMI monitor if using a DVI -> HDMI converter adapter dongle thing. Is this correct? Has anyone done this, or had problems doing so? My graphics card (a GTX 670) has DVI outs, but the screens i am looking to buy only take DVI. If this will work, what adapter should i buy? Thanks! January 31, 201313 yr DVI and HDMI are almost fully compatable, to my knowledge (aside from the connection) the only difference is DVI doesn't carry sound. A converter should work fine. The only risk is the timing source on the card, so if you have 2 DVI outputs and 1 HDMI output it may be that the timing source is shared between the DVI and HMDI connection, which would mean only 1 of the two inputs could be used. Your last statement seems to contradict the first one, if your card has DVI and the monitor is DVI what's the issue? You also have to be careful of the different types of DVI connection DVD-D, DVI-I etc... I run 4 monitors two on DVI and two on Mini display port this requires an active adapter but works fine. Sorry one final thing, there may be another risk with HDCP ability, if using the connection for Blu-ray etc, though DVI is one of the compatable standards along with HDMI and display port. January 31, 201313 yr I would buy a high speed DVI to HDMI cable. $10 if bought on-line. http://ncix.com/products/?sku=26972 Bert
January 31, 201313 yr Sorry on your second part, you should just need any small digital convertor, again be careful of the type of DVI Ian R Tyldesley
January 31, 201313 yr Author Thanks for the info. Yep, i made a typo! Should be "My graphics card (a GTX 670) has DVI outs, but the screens i am looking to buy only takes HDMI. If this will work, what adapter should i buy?" Didnt know there was more than one type of DVI - this is getting confusing! Adrian Burley London, UK
January 31, 201313 yr Didnt know there was more than one type of DVI - this is getting confusing! It's actually the connector type this website shows the different connectors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface Basically: DVI D is digital only (can be either dual link or single link) DVI A is analog DVI I can be either Ian R Tyldesley

Going to my three plasmas I use just a straight DVI to HDMI cable, cheap http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023102&p_id=2284&seq=1&format=2 That's for two, the third one is just an HDMI Similar setup downstairs, dual GTX560ti's to three 40" LED TV's using the above cable for all connections.
