Interesting observation about DX10 and unlimited frames

Featured Replies

Even when I was using DX9 I found that for some reason starting with a clean FSX.cfg and just using the highmem fix and wideviewaspect plus setting frames to unlimited seems (with no external limiter) to work best with my AMD card.

With DX10 I set it up as per Paul's guide and haven't tried it with a clean cfg yet as I've had quite a few issues lately (not related to dx10 or 9 for that matter) so don't feel like causing myself any more pain just yet.

It's amazing how different hardware drivers etc can have so many variable effects.

There must be dozens of different routes, yielding variable results, although we are probalbly mostly following Word Not Allowed's guide and Paul's how-to, in going from DX9 to 10.

I've made a huge effort to get things right while reinstalling FSX and various addons (I'm on item 106 in my install log, although that includes other programs ). I've been really happy, smooth flying, sliders further to the right than ever before, a cfg for less complex aircraft, and one for more complex, THEN!!!

I realised I had forgotten to instal Ultimate Traffic 2. I installed it with modest settings in UT2, and in FSX. Result? Adjustments to FSX settings and Inspector settings to get consistent fps again. I had always taken UT2 for granted, and its extra load had escaped me.

Just nothing can be taken for granted in this game!!!!

Hi Dylan!

Vsync is controlled by setting the:

Vsync Tear Control = Standard

Vertical Sync = 1/2 Refresh Rate

and then setting 30 fps inside FSX, along with DisablePreLoad=1 in the [Main] section of the fsx.cfg.cfg.

Nothing else should be needed. (This works in fullsceen only)

All the Best,

Hi Paul, sorry for the confusion. I just wanted to confirm that fullscreen vsync also works on my system with:

Vsync Tear Control = Standard

Vertical Sync = 1/2 Refresh Rate

DisablePreLoad=1 and an external limiter.

Thanks again!

I found a while back that using unlimited frames with heavy frame rate hitting planes like 737ngx was night and day difference in smoothness over the locked 30fps.

Hi Phil, that's exactly what pushed me to try and get unlimited frames + an external limiter running. Getting a detailed aircraft to run smoothly around a busy airport was the most taxing test on the system; all other scenery areas are now gravy.

p.s. fantastic videos BTW!

Yes - I would say an external limiter will work too. Vsync is dependent upon the frames being roughly 30, whether set by fsx or by a limiter.
