Default ATC Causes FSX Stutter

Featured Replies

Whenever ATC activates, especially after a period of silence, there is a slight FSX stutter, or momentary pause. Any ideas on the cause? Thanks.

Always noticed that too but I don't let it bother me. I presume it's to do with a sudden loading of the sound files into "max'd out" resources.

Yeah, Anthony, I figured as much. Just wondering if there was something that needed changing like BP or TBM or a specific slider adjustment.??

This is an interesting issue and one that I agree causes significant hiccoughs, however it doesn't seem to bother people enough to make an issue out of doing something about it.

I have noticed this occurs primarily the first time a particular .wav file loads/plays, then if it plays a second time you won't have a hiccough. This leads me to think read/writing off the drive to memory is involved, since after it has played once it's already loaded in memory. This would support the guess that processing the file thru the audio system isn't so much the issue. I've wondered if SSD's improve this. Also, at one point I was going to look into loading all audio files into a RAM drive which might address the issue, but never took the time and effort to see if this was possible.

I've seen this between sound and video with other programs as well not just FSX. I've always believed it was caused because the sound driver and the video drivers share the same IRQ (10), causing the stutter.

Thanks

Well, I switched from Use_pools=0 to use_pools=1 to see if that helped and it seemed to. Just completed a flight from SLC to PHX and didn't see any stutters with atc. Will try it out of LAX or somewhere more demanding, but right now it's cocktail hour and dinner time in the Rockies.
