March 8, 201313 yr My AMD/ATI Radeon 5850 is on its last legs so I am looking for a new card and would be grateful for any advice. System specs: CPU : Intel Core i7 920 2800 Mhz Motherboard: ASUS P6T SE Motherboard Chipset : Intel Tylersburg x58 8 GB RAM Graphics BUS: PCI Express 2.0 x16@16 OS Windows 7 64 bit I use FS9 with ASE weather; FSGlobal mesh; Ultimate Terrain; many payware airport sceneries; very dense ai aircraft coverage; payware aircaft such as PMDG/Level-D I get very good frame rates with the current setup, and even with dense cloud at addon airports still getting 20-30 fps. I am not committed to to AMD/ATI so would happily look at Nvidea if you reccomend. Many thanks Peter Peter Schluter

March 8, 201313 yr Author I am happy to spend to get the best performance... so I was thinking around the £350 level. I am not a computer expert btw. Peter Peter Schluter
March 8, 201313 yr Something like this would be nice with your rig, if you want to spend less a 2 gig card would be ok but a 4 gig card will perform better. EVGA 04G-P4-2673-RX GeForce GTX 670 4GB Rich Sennett
March 8, 201313 yr Peter, Just curious how that 8gb of ram is working for you? Is that 2 X 4 or 2 x 2 x 2 x 2. The reason I ask is your mobo and CPU run DDR3 ram. You usually see that being used in sets of 3 (6, 12, 24, etc) because of the tri channel memory controller. That's why you have 3 black slots and 3 red slots. If you mix the slots when you load your memory, you can't have some wonky things happen. Joe Brown
March 9, 201313 yr Author Joe The RAM is 2x2x2x2 Thanks for the suggestions. I will give this some thought. Peter Schluter
March 9, 201313 yr I have the Evga Gtx670 FTW and it works great for me on everything. Its about in your price range. I actually got mine for 315 off of Amazon (warehouse deals) Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
March 9, 201313 yr I'm running basically your proc and MB, and just upgraded from my aging ATI 4890 Toxic Edition to the EVGA 670 FTW. I don't run FS9, so I'm not sure what such an upgrade will buy you there, but I can describe what it got me in FSX. Basically what I expected was the ability to run better AA and see better image quality, a bit of increased smoothness and perhaps a very slight framerate improvement in relatively clear wx with a more noticeable improvement in heavy wx. And that's exactly what I got. The IQ improved since I'm able to run fairly high AA settings, overall smoothness increased and framerates improved noticeably in heavy clouds. Basically, I wouldn't expect any miracles but I'm pleased with the upgrade and do believe the 670 is a good price/performance choice. And while a good graphics card can't perform miracles on MS flight sim platforms, it's still fun on things like the Unigine DX11 Valley Benchmark where it can really stretch its legs. :-) Scott
