April 18, 201313 yr Author Ok, enough of the AMD vs GTX. Statements such as this "Looks" better than the other is not relevant unless you have clear evidence. As mentioned before, what looks good is subject to ones perception. If you have clear evidence whether photos or preferably video then there can be a more constructive debate. I am not looking to spend more than $250 on a new card because I am not fussy over having the best FSX in the world. I just want my setup to look crisp and to run smoothly while using high end scenery and aircraft add-ons. Marlon Carter - AVSIM Reviewer

Sorry if I offended anyone concerning their specific cards. They both work great for FSX. Just wanted to help those FSX jocks out there that are rocking ATI understand how to get equivalent results to their NVidia bothers so they don't have to panic that they "got the wrong card". Good idea on the video. Not sure how FRAPS is at showing IQ? Is that a good way of doing this sort of thing? I could create a new thread demonstrating typical ATI visuals and performance at equivalent to FSX+NVidia guide settings. As for cards in the $250 range. Either a GTX650 or I recommend the HIS HD7870 "GHz Edition" IceQ or ASUS HD7870 CU II V2. That is if your lucky to catch the clearance price of ~$250. HD7870 is more powerful in that price range than the GTX650. It sits just between a GTX570 and GTX580. The price is hard to beat right now. http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4835/his_radeon_hd_7870_ghz_edition_2gb_video_card_overclocked_review/index14.html http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/AMD-Radeon-HD-7870-GHz-Edition-Video-Card-Review/1501 Charles.

April 18, 201313 yr I have only ever used AMD cards and haven't had a single problem, performance is excellent and i run 3x27" monitors at 5760x1080. Just a heads up for you as I learned the hard way today. I too have used a Radeon (7850) for a while but fried it by tinkering inside my box. So I thought I would try an NVidia 660. It was a nice card and did a decent job..i really couldn't tell any difference in performance between the two. ONE BIG problem. since I TOO use three monitors I soon realized that once you setup the NVidia in Surround mode (Eyefinity on Radeon), you cant go back to a different monitor profile. That hosed me since I also use my box for many other things. The ATI drivers are so much better in that I can swap profiles instantly. So, since you use multiple monitors, this MAY be a consideration for you. I ended up returning the 660 and now have a 7870.. works fabulous. Just my .02 worth.

That's fine but i haven't seen any comments from you regarding the MANY posts made by nvidia users that ATI cards "the clouds look bad, the performance is bad", no clear evidence at all. I was also looking for a constructive debate, it's very hard to come by, people in the FSX world are very pro-nvidia and with good reason based on the past cards produced by ATI I have been thinking of putting some videos on Youtube of a Pilot career in FSC, by extension these will show off the environment. Just waiting for the next release so that i can bin editing config files. Ian R Tyldesley

OK. Here's the disclaimer. I don't have a lot of time to do these sort of videos. This was a raw capture with FRAPS and direct upload to YOUTUBE. No post processing as I don't even know how. So with that in mind. Three things when you see this to understand are... #1. I don't think my system can handle FRAPS capture in 1080 while flying at these settings. #2. I've learned that I suck at making videos. LOL #3. These videos are no where near as sharp, clear or smooth as what I see when I actually fly. Please watch in HD full screen at Youtube though. I wish I know how to just link.
April 20, 201313 yr Here's another try but really not representative of the quality I see when I fly. FRAPS to MOVIEMAKER to UPLOAD. Not the greatest. My system really struggled with 12xSSAA while FRAPS was capturing. :( It's closer to this type of visual and stutter free smooth. Click the image for full screen.
April 22, 201313 yr This was another attempt at a clearer video with different settings in FRAPS. Still not 1 to 1 what I see but closer. I wonder if I can HDMI out to a Camcorder?
