April 12, 201313 yr Just a quick question if you don't mind I would like to fly the NGX in VC mode practising all of the flows and procedures. I dont care much for scenery, traffic etc but the view inside the cockpit must flow smoothly. I need a relatively cheap laptop and I was looking at an i7 - 2.4 8GB Ram Radeon 7730M Windows 8 64 bit Do you think that that system would run smoothly with none on the 'outside' scenery etc enabled Thanks for your input
April 12, 201313 yr Commercial Member I wouldn't recommend a laptop because of the cooling issues that are present with most of them, but I'll say I ran it just fine using an HP dv7 laptop for a while. Kyle Rodgers
April 12, 201313 yr Author ok thanks..... i will look at some sort of cooling fan. Unfortunatley i need to practice the flows from a hotel room so a desktop is impractical I would also like to add on ... Ezdok TrackIR5 FS2crew will these make a difference to the fps ?
April 12, 201313 yr Commercial Member Any extra processes will have an effect on FPS, especially with FSX because it's more processor-bound than GPU bound. Most of your aftermarket cooling fans are really only good for basic home use. That is to say, keep the laptop cooler because someone has Excel and 10 browser windows open. FSX is an entirely different beast. I did, however, mount a USB fan on my desk in college to keep that laptop cooler by blowing cool air under it, while it was held off the desk by two packs of index cards. I don't have hard numbers, but my anecdotal evidence is that my dorm didn't have AC, and I'd get random shutoffs when it was hot outside. Lifting it off of the desk surface by a few inches and blowing air under it helped to avoid those. Kyle Rodgers
April 13, 201313 yr Look for some type of cooling pad. They are not expensive and better than nothing at all. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Description=laptop%20cooling%20pad&Submit=ENE Marty Becker PPL - Instrument Rating

April 14, 201313 yr Most gaming laptops today have more than adequate cooling capabilities. My Samsung gaming laptop has 2 huge intake/exhaust ports on the back for cooling. My core temps rarely top 50°C when running FSX, and the fans have never spun faster than slow speed. As long as you don't cover it up with a blanket, you should be fine. Now, a regular run of the mill laptop will get hot...really hot. If you're thinking laptop, get a gaming laptop. Matt L.
April 14, 201313 yr Author thats good advice..... thanks a lot I am looking to run the 'flows' and the 'checklists' from "cold and dark" to "parking" in the virtual cockpit only, using Ezdok and TrackIR5, so that I only need to purchase one large monitor instead of several monitors for each of the other panels (OH, pedestal etc) Will that software do the job so that i can click on all of the buttons and switches ? and is there any other add-ons that you can recommend ? Also, in your opinion, what would be the largest external monitor that I could run this on ? Thanks again for your time Matt
April 15, 201313 yr Just a thought, if not interested in outside views, maybe consider FS2004, and iFly 737. The iFly FS2004 version is virtually identical to their FSX version. iFly and PMDG are very similar products, I have both, and they both replicate the 737NG faithfully. FS2004 is much more likely to give you a good frame rate than FSX. I believe track IR is fine with FS2004, but not EZdoc, although other FS2004 camera software does exit. Fs2004 can be picked up pretty cheaply these days... Eugene
April 15, 201313 yr PS Just noticed you're looking at WIN8, iFly isn't good with WIN8, lots of UAC issues, personally I think WIN7 is the best platform for simmers. On PMDG's website, no mention of Win8 on system requirements, just Win7 and earlier, but not sure if that means they don't support it or just haven't updated the web site..
