April 13, 201313 yr Hi every one, The AVSIM hardware guide says that a power supply unit of 850W is a minimum. However, recently power supply units have gone through a price hike. So I want to know if a 650W power supply unit would work fine. Proposed specs are: i7 3770K [email protected] GTX 660 ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 2TB HDD 16GB Ram Thank you Zicheng Zicheng Cai
April 13, 201313 yr I'm no expert at building PC's, but I get by with a 550W power supply just fine. If you aren't going to add another graphics card, that will do the job just fine.

April 13, 201313 yr I wouldn't agree that 850w is a minimum, I have a high quality 650w PSU and have no issues. Most PSU manufacturers have a PSU calculator on their websites, I entered your spec into Corsair's saying you will heavily overclock your CPU and it came back with 600-650w - http://www.corsair.com/learn_n_explore This PSU calculator is a lot more comprehensive and doesn't have to over-spec you to cover itself unlike the manufacturers ones, your actual requirements appear to be around 400w - http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine Note the advice on the above site - "The recommended total Power Supply Wattage gives you a general idea on what to look for BUT it is NOT a crucial factor in power supply selection! Total Amperage Available on the +12V Rail(s) is the most important, followed by the +5V amperage and then the +3.3V amperage." I'd also add that like most situations quality is better than quantity so go for a decent brand, check specs and read reviews before purchasing. Finally if you want your PSU to have it's manufacturers warranty *do not purchase it through Ebay*.
April 14, 201313 yr Commercial Member Just get a Seasonic 550/620W supply and you'll be fine. An overclocked i5 and GTX560 should pull 220W or so. Cheers!Luke Luke Kolin I make simFDR, the most advanced flight data recorder for FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane.
April 14, 201313 yr Author Now I'm looking at a Coolermaster http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-GX-Bronze-RS650-ACAAD3-US/dp/B0035WTD2G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365950615&sr=8-1&keywords=coolermaster+650w and a Corsair http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Enthusiast-Certified-Compatible-platforms/dp/B004LB5AZY/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365950633&sr=1-1&keywords=corsair+650w Which one would you recommend? April 14, 201313 yr I have a XFX power supply because I like the Easyrail technology. Hard to explain in words so here's a youtube video What a normal power supply does is split the power between different lines and different components. If one component draws more power then is available on one line then it blows. With the Easyrail is put all the power on one rail. I think that's how it works. Sounds good but it could be good marketing speech. Either way it was cheaper then the Coolermaster and Corsiar.

Shouldn't be an issue in real life, but beware marketing spin. Cheers! Luke Luke Kolin I make simFDR, the most advanced flight data recorder for FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane.
April 14, 201313 yr I have a Corsair TX850 in my flightsim rig that I am very satisfied with. I tried running it on an Antec 600w-ish, but the system was totally unstable, especially with overclocking. Having said that about Corsair, I put a Corsair TX650W in my flighplanning computer, ahem sorry wife... office computer... and after three months it started making very high pitched sounds and it finally threw in the towel completely. Got it replaced under warranty and products from ANY brand can break down! Krister LindénEFMA, Finland------------------
April 14, 201313 yr Author Corsair they are great. Is 650W enough then? Thanks Zicheng Cai very high pitched soundsDon't TX850 and TX650 have the same core technology with just different power? Zicheng Cai
April 14, 201313 yr If only using one video card that 650 should be fine, let me rephrase that if you are not using a lot of hardware like saitek panels etc. you would be ok if you are going to use a lot of hardware then no you need something with a lot of power such as 850 watts or more IMO Rich Sennett
April 14, 201313 yr Is 650W enough then? Thanks Zicheng Cai Don't TX850 and TX650 have the same core technology with just different power? I would assume that to be the case. I have something like 15-16 usb units connected to the sim computer (with the 850W psu) but most are run over a couple of usb-switches with their own Power feed. It doesn't work perfectly since I every now and then get a message that some usb-device has suffered a Power outage, but overall I'm still happy Krister LindénEFMA, Finland------------------
