Antialiasing for Aircraft Shadows?

Featured Replies

hi guys,

first post here... switching to dx10, everything works great so far except there is no antialiasing for aircraft shadows when viewing from the outside...is this normal in dx10?

or did i miss a step somewhere? (i have executed all steps of the "How to" doc)

thank you

Hi Newish1! Great name! First - "Welcome to the DX10 Club!" :lol:

You haven't put your system specs in your profile, so I'll gamble that you use Nvidia Inspector, and suggest these settings, and add these (if you haven't already done so) two lines into the [Graphics] section of the fsx.cfg.

No - I've seen it at different times, and ignored it, but below is what I see now, with NI set as per the screenshot, so for me - it's not normal.

Here are a coupla pics I took a few minutes ago, on the OrbX PNW Darrington runway.

thanks again for trying to help

hmm somehow the pic didn´t show up...

Try checking Anti-Aliasing in the FSX Graphics Settings. Doesn't look like you have that set. See if that helps.

Here's the fsx.cfg, Newish, and here's a NI for you to try. Try them together: a quick note, too, you might benefit from moving the BufferPools setting to "0", with no RT.

All the Best,

This one:-

[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570.0]
Mode=1920x1200x32
TriLinear=1

is used by DX9, Odourboy, and this one:- (with the extra "0" at the end)

[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570.0.0]
Mode=1920x1200x32
AntiAlias=1
Anisotropic=1

Is used by DX10, so he's ok - but good point, as I've found lots of good info comes out this way. Thank you!

Additional - you might try these NI settings, too - very new, with a surprising way to control Vsync.

hi, tried the cfg together with the profile - problem still remains.. :mellow: i am really out of ideas right now..

i changed the bp to 0 and this works great with dx10!!! in dx9 i had a lot of spikes and glitches with bp 0

the ni setting with 58 fps vsync seems to work too - thank you for the hint!

btw. this is a really old installation with lots of installs / uninstalls / customized stuff. i therefore unistalled most of the addons exept some essentials before i tried dx10

maybe its time for a fresh install of fsx anyway?

You could do, New, but that's up to you. I rebuilt mine after the problems I had with the Coolsky DC-9 security system.

In the beginning I had jagged shadows, too, with lots of other issues, like shimmering, etc., but just ignored it - the water and smoothness being a substantial improvement over FS9. I've done something in my settings - somewhere - along with almost all the other DX10 users, but I don't know where, though. You might try this or this one (rtr) version, just in case it's a problem with your installation. Copy your old one "somewhere safe" and unzip this into its place, not forgetting to delete the shaders cache folders before starting FSX.

hi paul,

thanks for the shaders - i tried them but still no improvement. i believe it installed properly becouse the new shaders are fine with dx10..hmm

btw. the preview screen, where one selects aircraft and flights, has no aa either - i wonder if this is common in dx10? (does not bother me at all)

im in no hurry with installing fsx over, will turn shadows off for now. maybe you (or somebody else) happen to remember the "mysterious fix somewhere" would be great!

thanks again for helping!

No problem, New; Yeah - the AA settings don't appear to have any effect on the spinning aircraft, but someone will find a fix one day!

ncooper - that did the trick for the preview window!! thank you!

ncooper - that did the trick for the preview window!! thank you!

but messes up the AA-quality in fsx... :P

Like this, you mean?

I am happy with what I see, which is the main point.

It is very easy to become obsessed, as I know only too well and spend hours trying settings.

I have been there and done that, starting with Fs5..

Finally, I have found settings that my PC will run without effort,I can easily live with and which reduce aliasing

to an acceptable minimum.

I no longer look at the framerate, rather at the smoothness of the display, which is what really makes the difference.

Regards,

Nick
