Weather at landing airport

One of the things I would love to learn most is how to find out what the weather is like at the intended landing airport. I would like to be able to know the landing runway early enough so I can plan my STAR. Does anyone know a way to do this with a tip or trick or perhaps a utility that someone has released.ThanksGrahamUKRoute Developer

Graham,When you can plan or SHOULD fly a STAR, you are approching a medium large or large airport. This means that you can listen out the ATIS frequency to get the current local weatherconditions and landing rwy in use over there.Paddy.

Graham,Nowadays there exists a sytem where modern airliners can receive in the cockpit transmitted telexed messages, from any airport enroute or destination and with any info on pilot's request.(ACARS). Unfortunately (not yet) implemented in FS!Maybe in FS 2006 (?)Paddy.

I use activesky for this purpose.You can "fetch" the weather at any airport by entering the ICAO BEFORE you fly there.Makes it easier to plan what STAR you are going to use.Dan.

People, no more suffering...Just get the latest FSUIPC.zip and inside the zip file there's a little utility called Weatherset2.exeJust switch FS to windows mode and execute it and press enter under the "Station" label (or on the "0") the proper ICAO code and it will display the local Wx conditions of that location. The only thing is that it doesn't display Wx in a METAR way if you're that realistic FS-pilot type.For more info there's a readme file of course.I use it all the time when landing and departing on runways with any kind of radio in real life (AFIS/FBOs/ATIS too far away). Using on very remote runways it's kind of "cheating" to me so I just do what pilots do gotta feel the wind once on the landing circuit if there's no AI traffic to report over a Unicom/multicom.Pilot_76

Graham, Activesky2004 does everything you want, gives average winds en route, models winds aloft, the weather is very accurate and it's a great package.

Graham,In fact there is a program out there that will give you what you want plus a ton of other information relative to your flight. It's called FSAcars. Go visit the site http://www.satavirtual.org/fsacars/. Neat thing is it's freeware.

Another alternative is Flight Keeper (payware). It has its own ACARS so you can actually have the weather, incl. winds on muliple levels, not only for the dest

Paddy,we do have ACARS... one is freeware (Jose Oliveira) and the other is a part of FS Flight Keeper. It will give you Destination Weather (or any other station for that matter) along with many other things you might be interested in while up there. I only fly online and use ServInfo for that purpose, among other things. It gets its info from Vatsim, but can also get it from NOAH if you prefer.It is 99% accurate since weather might change while you fly if you do a long flight.Leo

FSUIPC has facilities that allows a program to know what is the rwy in use. However these possibilities rely in the AI until an AI uses the airport it will not give any info. Implemented that in FSAcars 3 then gave up.Maybe a program that uses the weatherset2 and AFCAD information could "guess" what it will be the rwy.Jos

http://www.aviationweather.gov is a great place to get weather in for US airports. For Canada you need http://www.navcanada.ca. For other countries, I'm sure other's know more about those ones.Another thing, STARs ussually aren't planned clear to the runway as current conditions can change derastically while enroute. ATC will ussually tell you the approach and runway in use at which point you would be able to determine the correct runway.----------------------------------------------------------------John S.
