Question about SID/STARs

Featured Replies

I wanted to ask you is there any way to choose which SID/STAR while flying with the default ATC?

no, default atc doesn't use stars and sids, only poor vectoring

Well, if you put the fixes in it will initially vector you and then, at some point you'll get the on course call.  I often depart without ATC and then join my IFR flight plan when I'm out of the terminal area so I can fly the whole SID.

So how do you choose the SID/STAR? I don't know which one is the best to choose. I use FSCommander for flight plans but it doesn't export them in the plan so I need to choose them again in FMC.

Simply, for SID, pick a rwy you want to use, then pick an exit point you want to use, and then open charts and find SID that connects the rwy with the exit point. If there are more SIDs for same rwy and exit point, you can pick a shorter one, or there is a note on chart to tell you which one is more standard.

Same is for STAR, just one small difference, there is usually a transition from STAR portion to approach portion. Transitions are noted at approach chart or separate chart (EGLL for example they noted transitions as "initial approach" chart)

Well, if you are unfamiliar with the airport and its procedures, you'll need to use the arrival and departure charts. Then you will see the logic.

I use simroutes.com when I'm wanting to fly with FSX ATC.  It incorporates the SID points directly into your flight plan.  Also you can see the transition exits right on the SID list it provides.  I don't use STARS for that much since FSX ATC generally vectors you off them.  If I'm using a STAR I just contact tower around the IAF of FAF.

I am just starting to learn STARs, and have tried it with my Reality XP 530W.  I selected a STAR into East Midlands (UK) airport, but ATC didn't seem to have any knowledge of the flight plan I had prepared in my RXP unit.  Anybody have any experience here?

My system specs: Intel [email protected] - 5.2 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, 32GB  DDR4  RAMNoctua NH-D15 CPU Cooler,1TB Seagate SSD, 4TB Seagate HD, Windows 10, Asus 32 inch monitor, Saitek Yoke, Throttle Quadrant, Rudder Pedals and Trim Wheel     Sims: MSFS2020      Preferred Aircraft  Black Square Bonanza, and Baron, A2A Comanche, PMDG DC-6, Red Wing L1049

The STAR would have to be in your flight plan for ATC to know anything about it.  FSX ATC doesn't know STARS at all so you have to put the fixes in...but they'll probably vector you anyway.  They could also assign you one or change it.  If you're flying with live ATC they'll probably use the STAR.  Other ATC programs may try to varying degrees.
