HUD use in cruise

Featured Replies

I have a question that's been on my mind lately.   How do most airlines use the HUD in the 737?  Is it retracted on the ground, until runway entry?   Is it then retracted again at cruise?  Or does it stay down the whole time?

How do most airlines use the HUD in the 737?

Depends on the airlines and their SOPs. Not all NGs have the HGS. I think this would be at the captain's discretion. I could see the use being mandated for low visibility takeoffs and CAT II/III landings.

SOP at my airline is -800/-900 down for takeoff and landing for tailstrike protection, if available. -400/-700 as desired. Obviously down for HGS or Hybrid approach on all.

I fly from takeoff until landing

I would guess that it's only really usefull at takeoff up to 1,000' and approach and landing when you want to monitor your instruments closely and still have an outside view.  Other than that  I don't see a need for it in climb, cruise or descent

I like to use it below 10,000 feet.

I use it for all takeoffs and landings.  Other then that I stow it around 10-18,000 then bring it down again around 10,000.  Sometimes I'll drop it down in cruise to see if I'm going to clear some weather ahead, then put it away again.
