Captain Sim 757 - Worth It?

Featured Replies

Hi All

I'm looking to add some variety to my flying and would like to fly a 757, which seems to be between the QW and CS offerings.

From reading a few threads the general consensus seems to swing in CS's favour, and I think it's also cheaper?

So my question is, is the CS 757 worth it these days, in the era of such quality offerings as the NGX.

I'm not expecting the 757 to be comparable quality wise to the NGX, but would like something with decent quality VC and exterior model as well as a working FMC.

Thanks in advance

Well the price depends from which models you want. CS 757 is indeed cheper if you are looking for just basic 757-200 passenger models (29.99e), however then if you want also 200 cargo and 757-300 model expansions the price is 50 euros while QW sells all the models in one package for 40 euros.

CS 757 seems to have systems a bit better modeled, QW has some systems a little more simplified than CS. However remember that many of the systems still have quite a lot bugs, in QW they at least more or less work like they were intended to...

Personally I would recommend you to get the QW one. Especially in area of flight dynamics it's way better in my opinion, CS 757 feels just somehow weird and not that different from default 737 while QW reminds me a bit more from flight models of 737NGX and such, more alive feeling.

Also if you buy CS 757 I recommend you to get some custom soundpack, default sounds sound like they were recorded from some vacuum cleaner or something. QW 757 on the other hand has great sounds for both RR and PW engines.

Since I got QW I've never felt like using CS 757 again.

//never mind, actually the download edition of QW 757 can be bought for around 28 euros or so from QW website, including all the models, making it way cheaper than CS.

Thanks for your detailed response, appreciate your help.

In terms of quality of VC and exterior model, is there much to choose between CS and QW?

Well I like the look of QW 757 VC more but I guess it's mainly personal preference.

Oh and btw I accidentally got the price of QW 757 from boxed version in Simmarket. Actually it seems like nowadays through QW website you can buy the download edition for around 28 euros or so, making it way better value for money than CS.

That could be the swinger! Thanks! Last time I looked on QWs website it was about 40 Euros!

The CS had some serious showstopper bugs (dealing with the AP I think) at one point. Something to consider.

I'd be surprised if the consensus on Avsim swung to CS between the 2 757 offerings... That said, it's not the cheaper one, not even when comparing base pack CS vs QW.

I have both and the CS version isn't worth it. The systems fidelity may be a bit more fleshed out, and you getting a thin veneer that shines brighter in the graphics department, but you pay for with with less realism in the flight dynamics and handling, poor sounds, bugs that still haven't been ironed out after all this time and plenty other issues that shouldn't be there anymore. QW's 757 is a rather simplified rendition, but you get all versions of the 757, the flight dynamics are more accurate, the sounds are bearable and all the systems that do work, work. In essence, QW's 757 should be able to at the very least tide you over until Level-D's 757 launches and gives you full fidelity. The 757 is my favorite aircraft ever designed and I'm eagerly awaiting Level-D's work, but until it comes out of being vaporware, QW will please you the best.

Thanks guys, going to go for the QW!

From being an owner of the CS 757, I don't think CS took the time to do a great job on their 757. Go with QW.

Well, I took the plunge and purchased the QW757 tonight.

I've only had the very briefest of plays with it, but my initial thoughts are:

1) I can't get over the low quality of the VC. I've obviously been spoiled by the NGX!

2) I'm very disappointed that you cannot control the FMC directly from the VC, instead you have to click on the FMC to bring up the 2D FMC.

This is a very big disappointment for me. I quote from their product overview:

"Detailed 3D Virtual Cockpit with parallel functionality as 2D environment. If it works in the 2D, it works in the 3D!"

Obviously they choose to gloss over the fact that this does not extend to such peripheral(!) features as the FMC. From the manual:

"Detailed 3D Virtual Cockpit with parallel functionality as 2D environment. If it works in the 2D, it works in the 3D"

3) These two gripes aside, it's nice to fly something bigger than the NGX and have a choice of some different operators to fly.

All in all, for less than £30 I'm pleased at first glance. But I feel that saying "everything works in the VC" when that quite clearly is false, is a bit wrong on a non-refundable product.

Well, it was their first product ever and made as a FS9/FSX product, if memory serves. This could explain the graphics looking out of date compared to the NGX. As far as FMC goes... It's a bit of a hassle to have to open the 2D FMC, sure, but I personally find it easier to use at times. Plus, they didn't really know where to strike the balance at the time between simplification and complexity, something they learned much better with the Avro offering. All in all, you made the right choice, it's just that the right choice still comes nowhere close to the PMDG 737. You'll have to wait for Level-D's 757 for that.  ^_^

Where did you get it? As far as I remember QW sell their stuff via the Flight1 wrapper system, whcih should allow you to return it at no loss within 30 days.

I think that the VC is nice, even in times when planes get more and more detailed, but then again I still don't own the NGX.When I bought it in 2011 it was one of my first  more detailed planes (the PMDG MD-11 being the first one) and I still love flying it, and I haven't found anything that works in the 2D, but not in 3D(which is what is being advertised), but it definitely doesn't simulate every single switch's function. That was never the intention, and I think one shouldn't expect that from a 35$ product.

Good points both. As I said for what I paid for it I am happy, but to say 'everything that works in 2D works in 3D' is a bit off, when what they mean is it has to be used in 2D even in 3D, if you get me!

Minor gripes aside, it's nice to be flying a 757!

QualityWings sells on multiple sites. However, they only sell their Avro 146 on via the Flight1 wrapper system. The B757 package isn't available through Flight1.

I'm probably missing something very basic, but I can also find no way of changing the distance on the ND from within the VC without bringing up the 2D EFIS panel. Is that another thing that you can't do from the VC? Seems a very fundamental thing to need to do whilst flying.
