I've been using the ORBX FTX Central and I've been experiencing very bad framerates on approach to Calgary. I just did a 200 minute flight from Memphis to Calgary Intl in my SimCheck A300B4, and I had a steady frames of 6.0 on approach. I managed to get the bird down, but it felt like I was watching a slideshow of FSX screenshots. I like to fly out in the country with my An-2 and Lancair Legacy... frames are fine out there, but when I get to Calgary, I watch the frames get in the low teens, and sometimes in the single digits.

 

I've flown to Calgary before, with the PMDG 737NGX and the Aerosoft Airbus Extended X. Both flights, I experienced low frame rates... which is disappointing because the city looks beautiful during a dusk approach. The only flight I got good frames (upper teens) was in the MJC Q400, which was a pleasure to be able to experience the city without a slideshow.

 

I have the Thai Creations Paro, both FlyTampa St. Maarten Complete and Buffalo/Niagara Intl, and the freeware ActiveILS Kai Tak and SunSkyJet Sceneries KPHL. With none of these fantastic airport addons do I experience such awful frames that I do in Calgary.

 

Does anybody know if, CYYC is just harsh on frames, or is there another problem here?

Hmmmm.  This area is located in the NRM package I believe.

 

I've not had any issues in the past however can't say I've flown near Calgary either.

 

I might do a fly by tonight and see how my performance is and report back.

 

In the meantime someone here may have more info.

I would suspect it is the Autogen that is slowing things down for you. Try Normal or Dense when you are flying into a city.

ORBX is great in the bush but tends to slow down in urban areas, Seattle and Sydney are know for low FPS as well, where flying in the Fjords with sliders maxed gets great performance when doing bush flying.

The UK scenery uses new Autogen technology and flying around London is an improvement compared to older scenery releases.

 

Edit: What I tend to do is fly out of the bigger cities into smaller regional airports as the performance isn't so bad on departure, for example, Calgary to Kelowna or Calgary to Spokane. This way you get better performance on approach and landing.

Well dude, even with my 16gig i7-2600 and GTX 780 SC I only get 8-12 frames per second approaching any Orbx airport!

6 FPS sounds very low. It says in your profile you have a 3.1 GHz i5, what model is it? Nehalem, Sandy Bridge, Ivy?

 

Do you have any other add-ons for the Calgary area than the base OrbX region? If you have OrbX PNW, what FPS do you get over Seattle?

It is a combination of things. ORBX scenery uses denser autogen annotation than FSX default on most of their landclass types. Also, more accurate landlcass means more variation and more variation of textures and autogen to load at the same time. It's all simple logics. More detail = more data = less performance.

All the Orbx Regions have enhanced landclass and custom autogen placement tiles, which almost always results in denser urban areas. If you follow the guidance in the region and airport manuals, it states as much, and recommends a lower Autogen Density than you would use were you flying default FSX.

 

If you are one that also increases the LOD_Radius beyond 4.5 to avoid the pop-in effect of Autogen, a high Autogen setting can and will also have drastic effects on your FPS in urban areas.
