July 6, 201312 yr Author It is a little confusing and I have shown that here, but it seems logical once you get started. I have had some instances in finding things not exactly where you placed them once you start flying... Seems to take a little persuasion to get them into the right places. It is however, very satisfying to build the airport to look reasonably like what it should. Thanks to this forum, a lot of things have been made clearer and have thus enhanced my x-plane experience. July 7, 201312 yr While we are on the subject of WED. I am really having a heck of a time trying to figure out which libraries we can use within WED that Export to Global will accept. I finally complained to BEN on his blog and he indicated that the usable libraries will be highlighted in some manner to bring those to our attention, this should occur in version 1.3. I have the usual scenery libraries (openscenry X, RU, etc. ) and some of those WED 1.2 will not accept for Export to Global, makes for a frustrating experience. If someone knows for sure at this point what is acceptable I would appreciate some guidance. July 7, 201312 yr Author I have not had "Global" accept one yet.. something about outside parameters. It really improves my flying experience though and I would love to share.. John Wingold
July 7, 201312 yr The way I understand it is that those "outside of parameter" objects are scenery items that we have inserted are not on the approved list. They have a code unknown to us to prevent their upload. But the good news is that within version 1.3 of WED (forthcoming) that the acceptable object/library (.obj) will be denoted so we can see what we can use. I have been successful in uploading to Robin a couple of small airports, successful only in the ability to send, not in their acceptance at this point, bit early I suppose. I do not know which libraries I was successful in using. July 7, 201312 yr Laying out the airport, the hard way. Noting each point lat/long in something like google Earth and putting same into Wed. Must be an easier way, like superimposing a map into Wed to follow. Any suggestions ?? Trevor Golding
July 8, 201312 yr Trev, There is. In the view menu choose the option 'pick overlay'. Some more detail for you: What I do is use google maps to find the airport of interest and zoom in to the airport so you can see the detail, especially to a level where taxi markings are visible. Generally, this level of zoom won't allow you to see the whole airport, so I pan around taking screen shots and assemble the collage of screen shots in photoshop. I then save that image as a jpeg. Going back to the 'pick overlay image' command, simply navigate to the image and it will place it behind the 'skeleton' drawing of the field you're modifying. In the same 'view' menu, you can adjust transparency so the image shows through allowing you to trace taxiways, aprons etc. The main fiddle is getting the image to line up, so you may have to select and drag the corners of the jpg to size it it. (Hold down shift before dragging to prevent distorting the image.) July 9, 201312 yr Thanks Stu, Read all that in the manual but couldn't figure out how to get Google earth to a state for the pick overlay to work. Haven't got photo shop so I will go have a play with what I have. Ta Trevor Golding
July 9, 201312 yr Thanks Stu, that's good information. Will have to take a look at GIMP ( I do not have photoshop ) and see if it will suffice. Another piece of software to learn. I hope when the WED full instructions and tutorials come out that they will be in PDF so we can print them out, need something I can mark up. July 11, 201312 yr Commercial Member Hey guys. An even easier way to get hold of overlay images is to use nonimapview. You can download the whole airport piece by piece, which is nice. But the best thing is, each download has the exact position stored in a text file. Just copy the latitude and longitude for each corner and the image will line up in its real world position. The program is still in beta I believe (current version is 0.33) and as a slight downside, you'll need java to make it work. So use your discresion on whether the benefits out way any perceived risk. For me though this tool is great when creating or fixing airports. I'm currently modifying Vienna international to fit with the free photoscenery over at simheaven.com Best wishes, Jess B
