Shading

Featured Replies

There has been a lot of discussion here on shading. I recently purchased Euro Truck Simulator 2. The shading in that is amazing. At night when you go between streetlights the glow of light passes through the cab. When you go under a tree it darkens etc. And the graphics are top notch.

I am not an expert and do not know if maybe something like this could be a new platform. I know it is just on the road and only covers small areas at a time but they do have something here. I have played different driving games over the years but nothing like this.

EuroTruck 2 looks decent to me (I bought it in the Steam Sale) but honestly it doesn't hold a candle to the seriously advanced game engines out there like the CryEngine 3, Frostbite 2, UniEngine Valley etc.

CryEngine 3 is amazing. It seems the USArmy is using it in simulators:

Frostbite and Unigine also have awesome results.

Is CryEngine 3 on PC. That is Amazing. But again can we use these for a Flight Sim or is it a totally different avenue.

By the way Matthew, who hasn't seen a road train. That is not a sim.

Thanks,

Ron

Ron, CryEngine 3 is the engine on crysis 2 and 3. Search some YouTube gameplays. Frostbite is the one in battlefield 3 and 4. They are both made for shooting games, but maybe they can be adapted for other types. There are some draw distances and detail radius differences from fs engines. But I don't really know how much of a limitation that is. They are also very efficient and stable.

This shading and lightning adds a lot to the immersion factor IMO. Unfortunately it is not possible to have this in DX9 in FSX. This guy called Steve who has been working an a DX10 fix has also been working on getting the shadows to work correctly and especially make them higher resolution (i.e. no jagged edges). Unfortunately it also depends on the specific aircraft whether this is possible or not. For example, in the PMDG 737NGX this effect will not work, unless PMDG change this in a future SP of course.

CryEngine is being used for Squadron 42 and Space Citizen - www.robertsspaceindustries.com

The info they share on what happens behind the scenes is fascinating (at least to me) and gives you an idea of the scope that these engines can be used to provide some amazing effects. The difference between a space simulator however and a living breathing world have to be realised, but tte CryEngine guys are working closely with this team to develop some pretty cool stuff.

I'm also looking forward to the Occulus Rift integration which I have a feeling will be pretty amazing

Cheers,

Danny
