November 6, 200421 yr HiI have noticed that the coast lines are not straight but a bit zic zac. Is there a way I can correct these? I have a Feforce PCX5900 video card with P4 3.2 GHz 1GB Ram.Stelios Stelios Christofides
November 8, 200421 yr For better Coastlines, or even streams and Rivers, Id get American Data, at http://www.fsgenesis.net Its a _Bargain_ @ $14.95 for the entire US... Rivers no longer run uphills, but through the valleys, and downhill.... For those who already have USA Roads, there is a version without the roads at a reduced price. Justins other packages, like Landclass, Mesh, et. al. cant be beat. Excellent quality, at reasonable prices. Ive been buying things from Justin for over a Decade, and never been disappointed.
November 8, 200421 yr I find your reply somewhat confusing. The original poster asked about coastlines. AD Roads does not include coastlines as far as I know. They are working on a product to cover it, but it is not expected till at least Christmas, probably much later (especially considering how long it took to get AD Roads out after initial hints of its existence.)There are a number of people who have improved coastlines, it depends on where you are asking about. Jim Keir is one, check out his site at http://www.jimkeir.co.uk/FlightSim/index.html. I believe somebody posted here on AVSIM a set for the California coastlines. I don't know of any single source at the current time, but there may very well be one or more.Thomas Perry
November 8, 200421 yr "I have noticed that the coast lines are not straight but a bit zic zac."Make certain that the area where you saw the ugly coastlines is enabled in the Scenery Library. I had the same thing once until I realized that I had previously disabled the area.Greg
November 8, 200421 yr > I find your reply somewhat confusing. Check the coastlines in HI... They are already improved. If you purchased it, and have not checked for new versions, you are missing a great update. Ive signed up several years ago for the lifetime membership. In the first year, what I received was worth _more_ than what it cost. Since then, each year the value received was again, worth more than it cost, and its all virtually Free to Lifetime Members. When I switched from 2002, to FS9, everything received in the past was replaced. Since I installed American Data, the coastline in CA has improved. Don't know what caused the changes, but it probably has been due to improvements in Rivers. The files which make up rivers, are also called coastline files, this may have had something to do with it. Yesterday, decided to follow the Columbia River from Portland OR, to its source. The difference blew my mind! No rivers running up and down hills, but where they belong, in the valley's. All the islands in the Columbia, right where they belong, etc... The Freeway running alongside the river, and the roads in WA on the other side, all the way past The Dalles. When the land flattened out later, the freeway ran straighter, and where it belonged, etc. Bob
November 8, 200421 yr Here is a picture in Hawai showing the coast line. I get this everywhre in the world.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/96835.jpgStelios Stelios Christofides
November 8, 200421 yr The coast line in the attached screenie appears to be the correct default coast. As I understand it, MS used the World Vector Shoreline, along with DTED 0 from the US National Geospatial Agency (NGA) for FS terrain, except in certain areas (mainly in US) where enhanced terrain was used. They may have used some GTOPO30 elevation data too,Those data sets are simply too coarse to take full advantage of the approximately 5 meter resolution the sim can display.Better coast data is available for the US, from the National OceanCenter and National Geologic Survey at NOAA. However, replacing the coast line, without also fixing the mesh and flattens can produce an unsatisfying experience.scott s..
November 8, 200421 yr Commercial Member Howdy,he he, this is a great example of a thread where a decidedly unspecific question leads to all sorts of tangents.I suspect that Selios is actually complaining about the jaggedness of the shoreline texture itself, not about its placement or misplacement. His screenshot shows a pretty strong sawtooth pattern along the water's edge.So much for the "what is wrong part", if I'm correct. However, I don't really know an answer to this but suppose it's a matter of graphics settings or drivers. My coastlines look a bit more fuzzy and thus the pattern is less distinct. Seems to me as if the clarity of Selios's FS environment actually works against him, as the ~4.8m resolution of the VTP2 shoreline textures becomes visible. In general, the default coastline textures are pretty poor, except for those places that do have a straight even-width coastline in the real world. We need some replacement shoreline textures!Cheers, Holger

Well I agree with you then that we need some replacement shoreline textures!Stelios Stelios Christofides
November 9, 200421 yr Have never seen a coastline like that picture, and I only have a 2.6g computer with 512memory.

November 10, 200421 yr Believe it was about 1500, I set up with FSNav, a "Tour" around the coast and got so many good pictures, think that I'll make a screensaver out of it. Then, I'll put a copy on Flightsim.com, and maybe here. Did that with Hurricane Isabel when it hit FL, and had fun. Flew into the EYE of the storm, and all the way down to Sea level. Attempting to fly out, got to close to the storm wall, and it roller me right upside down. Had to fly that way, til I got into the center, and roll upright, then cirle up and out again. This aircraft is my very Favorite. Flew the Kingair for years, but when Freedom Air came out with this one, switched. Been flying it 90% of the time since then. Bob
November 10, 200421 yr I think that your settings for detail textures also affect the resolution of the shores - i can't run the sim on this PC, so I can't check the options for you, but I think you'll figure it out. You can set use detail textures to land, water or both. I'd play with that setting and see if it makes a difference. One setting you'll lose some water wave detail, but gain sharper shores. Someone with a better working knowledge of this setting please jump in here ;)Best,sg [email protected] | 32gb RAM | EVGA GTX1080 8gb | Mostly P3Dv5 (also IL2:BoX, DCS, XP11)
