One drive, Two choices

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I have a simple question. I am starting to change over from HDD to SSD, but cannot afford to do in one swap, so am doing one at a time as money becomes available.

So for my first drive, what would be the best way to go, performance wise: O/S on SSD & FSX on HDD or FSX on SSD & O/S on HDD, or doesn't it matter?

Thanks,

Rick Hobbs

G'day Rick.

Your question is not unique and has been answered many times in this forum should you care to search.

It depends.  Is your PC ONLY for FSX and absolutely nothing else, then put FSX on SSD.

If you actually use your PC and it also happens to be your primary FSX machine, then I would put the OS on SSD.

Opinions will vary. Mine is that you should put the OS+frequently used applications on the SSD. It will reduce the system bootup time from several minutes down to seconds, and applications will launch almost instantly.

Moving FSX to a SSD will reduce initial loading time slightly, but it won't do anything for the blurries or overall frame rate. Due to the huge size of the FSX folder with lots of addons installed, I honestly think it's a waste of precious SSD space for such a small improvement. A properly optimized and defragmented HDD will do fine. This is just in my experience though.

Thanks guys for your replies.

@ Appliance. You are probably right, but if you look at the differing views from VeryBumpy & JimmiG, maybe it is worthy of further discussion.

Thanks again guys,

Rick Hobbs
