Another feature we need in FS2k6...

Featured Replies

Saw this on the X-Plane site and was amazed. I was at KATL this summer and was surprised how much the runways sloped down when looking west. Depending on which runway you were using a plane would either have a takeoff advantaged or an uphill climb to takeoff. I hope the guys at Redmond are looking at this because runway sloping is an all too real topographical feature at many airports... I was hoping this feature would appear in FS2k4 but now I'm hoping this finally get's addressed in FS2k6. My congratulations goes out to the X-Plane developers for realizing and simulating this key element...Image removed. Exceeds size restrictions.

I agree 100%. That would finally get rid of the problem with mesh and airports on plateaus or in canyons. Even "flat" airports are not flat. This is probably top 5 in my wish list. :)

Was just thinking how that would look with a faulty add-on mesh, or exact mesh but with a wrong airport position like we have hundred in MSFS.But that sure is a great feature. All I am afraid of is that it would do more harm than good when I see what mess American Data with it's roads does to my scenery due to faulty coast lines and airport locations.Alex

** Bump ** Just looking to get other opinions on this...:-wave

Simple fix, Microsoft just needs to leave airports where they are and use a more accurate terrain mesh. Perhaps it can be in a Pro version that would be on DVDs rather than CDs now that DVD-ROMs are more prevailant.----------------------------------------------------------------John S. Bob, if you re-read what he posted you'll see he visited Atlanta this summer, in real life, and was commenting on the slope of the runways that he observed there. He never said the screenshot at the X-Plane site was of KATL.

That's an airport runway ?!! It looks more like a rollercoaster track to me :-lolChris Low.

Some airports do look like this. For example at ESPC the runway looks like a hammock :-lol

FS2004 only allows for airports to have one single elevation for every point of the airport. Of course in the real world there aren't going to be areas that large that have the exact same elevation the whole way around. For example, at Buffalo the difference in elevation from one end of the runway to the other is around 46 feet. It doesn't sound like much, but if you look at the real runway, there is a noticable slope to it. It actually has a dip in the middle with each end being at a different height. This would give airports much more "personality" and uniqueness.

I was answering the post above me regarding airports with faulty mesh and/or airports that Microsoft moved from their actual location because of their terrain problems.----------------------------------------------------------------John S. Yeah. At Spokane International, runway 03-21 slopes down then up, and 07-25 slopes up then down.----------------------------------------------------------------John S.
