September 13, 201312 yr Hello, I'm not too thrilled w/ daytime textures in California for FTXG, though nighttime lighting is really nice. One thing I find pretty dissatisfying is the, I think, complete lack of curved roads in tracts of homes for example which look quite realistic in GEX. That's common all over CA but I have yet to see this in FTXG so I'm sitting here contemplating hitting the Enable button to compare GEX again, but I really don't know for sure what will happen--specifically, to the FTXG textures installed if I re-enable GEX. Of note, when I installed FTXG I did not uninstall GEX completely, just used this panel to disable GEX, and the FTXG install seemed to go fine. I am aware from other replies to the similar thread that the orb night lights will go away if GEX becomes the texture set. Does anyone know what actually happens when you re-enable GEX in this context? Will the FTXG textures come back if I disable GEX after taking another look? I'm trying to see if it's a simple matter of enabling/disabling to do a comparison now that I've tried FTXG, but am trying to avoid as you can tell a complete uninstall. One option I think I may have is to reenable GEX and perhaps pic up a better lighting option than UTX which I really don't care for. Is there a stand alone orb lighting option somewhere that I could use just in the US, while retaining FTXG for the rest of the planet? Thanks in advance! September 13, 201312 yr I don't think this will be working. FTXG is texture replacement as GEX is . So by installing FTXG all GEX textures are simply overwritten.
September 14, 201312 yr One option I think I may have is to reenable GEX and perhaps pic up a better lighting option than UTX which I really don't care for. Is there a stand alone orb lighting option somewhere that I could use just in the US, while retaining FTXG for the rest of the planet? I don't really know about other 3d lighting options, other than UTX, which would work. be very wary though about the "rest of the planet" idea. if you enable GEX over FTXG GEX textures will overwrite FTXG and the FTXG textures "should" be backed up so they can be restored if you don't enable GEX. what you might run into is the fact that GEX regions are not "clean" due to Microsoft's design of FSX. if you install GEX NA and fly anywhere in NA you will see nothing but GEX, which is I'm sure what you're after. FSX's landclass though, uses those North American Textures all over the place, not just in North America. so you will find that a sizeable portion of your FTXG coverage worldwide will be altered as well. There are european textures in the carribean, there are african textures in Alaska. it's a mess. Not GEX's fault, Nick didn't want to mess with the FSX file structure. but the GEX regions never were self-contained to their own area, they are all over the place and several of them overwrite each other. (which is why if you buy 2 regions you get a NA upgrade) That's why ORBX went with a global product rather than breaking it up, tbh GE fs9 was a global product as well, not sure why Nick broke it up for FSX. long story short, unless you don't mind texture clashes all over the place, picking one or the other is probably the best bet
September 14, 201312 yr Author long story short, unless you don't mind texture clashes all over the place, picking one or the other is probably the best bet I appreciate the advise ShawnG. I think I'll just stay w/ FTXG for a while and see how it goes. I did some more touring around California today and while it can look a little too busy in spots overall it pretty good though I can say I prefer it as much as I did GEX California. Maybe I should dial back a little in places. Texture detail back a notch might be a good thing. But as I am often slow to adopt new things it may grow on me more and more. Also, night flying is really fabulous--so much better than in the GEX/UTX world for certain. Since I enjoy the visuals for dawn & dusk flights most I'll get more out of it than I'll lose I'm sure from what I've seen, again mainly from the night-lighting in FTXG. Appreciate the thoughtful reply Shawn ;o) Noel System: 9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync. September 14, 201312 yr You will soon be able to get FTX NorCal which will be a detailed region. Add to that FTX Global OpenLC for North America + Vector goodness, and the rest of CA should look pretty darn good (hopefully)!
September 14, 201312 yr If you DO decide to revert to GEX, then you should uninstall FTXG first. It changes more than just textures, and you could find that your GEX doesn't look quite the same as it used to. ORBX have now provided a FTXG UnInstall tool which is said to "work flawlessly", though I haven't tested it myself. So far I'm happy with FTXG where I fly.

Add to that FTX Global OpenLC for North America + Vector goodness, and the rest of CA should look pretty darn good (hopefully)! I'm puzzled--is OpenLC a separate addon from ORBX, and/or is it part of the Vector installation do we think? As I understand it there won't be golf courses w/ Vector for now and that's not good as far as I'm concerned!
