Would like to get some feedback before upgrading again. I think this should run P3D very nicely.

I bet my 4770k beats that thing when it comes to FSX. And thats saving like 700 bucks.

I don't run FSX... If you can run your CPU @ over 5 GHz then why are you running your 4770 at 4.5 GHz?, I don't get that. Right now I'm using my i7 3960x, but its time to hand that CPU over to my main computer. P3D at 5GHz with an Nvidia GTX690, man that would be sweet.

The price in that link looks like a rip off.

I agree with Oscar though, as far as FSX/Prepar3d, I doubt that would beat a 4770K. A "stock" 4770K beats the AMD 9590 on a lot of the benchmarks based on the reviews.

 

It's got nothing to do with how many Ghz it's running. Comes down to the performance of the chip itself. i.e my 4.5Ghz 4770K performs better than my 4.9Ghz 2600K.

 

Not to mention FSX/Prepar3d won't make use of all 8 cores.

I could care less for bench marks outside of flight simulation, this will be going in a P3D only system. Guess I could purchase phase cooling from Frozen and then overclock my 3960.

Is your 3960X running stock at the moment?

 

How high do you want to overclock? You don't need phase cooling to reach a decent overclock unless you're really shooting for the moon.

 

Also I know you already have a GTX 690, but in all honesty you'd be better running a single GTX 680/780 since FSX/Prepar3d makes no use of SLI.

 

The 690 will ofcourse run other games better.

I'm running at 3.8 GHz with a Prolimatech Meghalem Heatsink with 2 Thermalright Fans. I want to run as fast as the CPU is capable while maintaining solid stability. I'm also hoping that P3D will sometime in the future take advantage of SLI. But your right, a 4 gig card opposed to 2 gig each (SLI) 690 would of been the better move right now.

I'd say you'd be able to overclock at least somewhere north of 4Ghz with the cooler you have. Have you tried it at all?

 

Just keep an eye on temps.

 

You may not get as high as with say custom water cooling. No need for phase change cooling.

Yeah, but its unstable. I'm sure its me and my overclocking ability. That's one of the reasons I was looking at the 5 GHz CPU.

Clock speed really doesn't mean much here. Intel's architecture is so far beyond AMD's right now that I'd almost be willing to bet the 4770K can beat it at 1+ GHz lower clock.

Clock speed is important to FSX however it is not everything. Taht 800 USD 5GHZ chip is pretty much a ripoff, the FX8350 for 200 USD can easily overclock to 5.0Ghz and deliver better results. I am running FSX on my Phenom II 965BE at 3.4Ghz and I average 25-30 fps in smaller airports and about 18-25 in the major ones, the exceptionally large ones like Atlanta, JFK or Boston I get about 10-15 FPS using payware aircraft and payware scenery with complexity to maximum.

 

Personal reports from peoples systems in my group at MSFlights.net who are using the FX8350 with FSX on extremely high settings using Payware quality addons even in places like Boston are reporting 20-25 FPS, and for 200 bucks I think its impressive, and that's not even overclocked.

 

If you are on the fence about a new CPU from AMD, you might want to wait for socket AM4 which should be the next release.

Wow, well that's good to know. I'd rather stay with Intel anyway, but when I looked at the AMD and seen 5 GHz without me touching the overclock, I thought that was sweet. Since day one everyone's been talking how FS is CPU hungry, that's why I was looking at the 5GHz CPU from AMD.

 

Looks like I might be better off paying someone in Boca Raton to overclock my system for me. Time to do more research.

Hope amd someday can take on intel top cpu as I think intel is overpriced. Think Amd is good for slim wallet user. A10 6800k stock 4.1 at $130 looks tempting but what holds me back that I know amd does not do so well on single threaded applications.

It's not even 5GHz really. It will just reach 5GHz with turbo
