Autothrottle - What am I doing wrong?

Featured Replies

Hi, just wondering if anyone had any ideas what I am doing wrong.

2 things....

I understand that the auto throttle will remain engaged, unless I disengage it.

For example on my last flight I wanted to hand fly the approach and let the A/T handle the speed.

So I disengaged the autopilot and hand flew the approach and the auto throttle seemed to handle the speed for a while, then I noticed my speed was dropping to an unsafe level like the A/T had been turned off but I had not dis engaged it.

To get it working again I engaged autopilot, and turned A/T off and on again then dis engaged autopilot again so I could hand fly and this time the A/T controlled the speed.

This has happened a few times now where I have left A/T on but it seems to stop working after a while.

Again Auto throttle related, I have noticed with the 777 (unlike the NGX) that if during flight with A/T engaged If I move the throttle lever on my Saitek throttle then this overrides the Auto throttle and speed is no longer controlled by the A/T unless I turn it off and back on again, is this normal behaviour?

Thanks

Hi,

first of all, were are you disengaging the A/T? on the MCP? If you do it on the MCP tis is wrong, only used for non-normal procedures.

A/T dissengage is done via the litte knob on the thrustlever.

It should be possible to override the A/T anytime by hand or you press the button on the thrustlevers.

Press it one time to get the A/T hold mode, second time for disengage.

For your problem with dropping Airspeed, in any mode, expect A/T off on the MCP, you will have the socalled wakeup-mode active, in this is airspeed is to slow A/T will connect automaticly when you airspeed becomes to low.

regards

Your hardware throttle might be overriding it. Do you have the hardware throttles set through FSUIPC? Do you have the override option set in the FMC?

Silly as it may sound, I take it as you were hand-flying and were letting the A/T control the speed, you did input a speed, say around 137 for Flaps 30 Vref in the MCP?(see attached)

been working to try and figure out what I am doing wrong as well.  When setting up the CDU if the T/O page tells me that I need to have at flaps 5 lets say 163 I set on the MCP 168 (VREF + 5) but my problems is it refuses to set speed according to what I have entered. I Need to get this bird figured out. I dont have an trouble with the 737. 757 or even 767  and the Airbuses. this thing has me totally stumpted. If I turn on the LNAV / VNAV switches or enter a speed in the MCP it will hold it for a time but will still go over 250 kts below 10000. I have even entered the speed reduction in the flight computer

In my case i have have a strange issue with the toga (maybe the same cause).

When i takeoff and push toga , somtimes the A/T disconnect, setting throttles to iddle and then i have to take control manually!
